The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.
On a distant hill in view of the castle, Keith had just proposed marriage to Princess Allura and she said yes. Now more than ever, they were destined to spend their lives together. Their new immediate problem was informing everyone else of the news.
Keith rolled over on his side, pulled the princess close to him, and kissed her. They enveloped each other in arms and legs in that kiss for a long time until Keith finally broke it.
"We should be getting back," he said.
"Hmm, mm," agreed Allura in a dreamy tone and then she opened her eyes. "We'll need to break the news to the others. I don't know how we'll do that."
"We should tell the team right away. They saw me coming to get you and I think we owe it to them to let them know."
"OK."
They stood up and both got on the horse with Allura riding side saddle in back of Keith. Then they rode back to the castle. Lance, Hunk, and Pidge were still out on the front balcony when saw them coming. Then they went back inside the castle because they didn't want Keith and Allura to see them watching and wanted them to feel they had their privacy. Keith and Allura rode the horse back to the stables and Keith helped Allura off the horse. Although she didn't need the help, she enjoyed it. Then they went into the castle to find the team, but the first person they came across was Coran.
"Keith," said Coran, "I need talk with you at Castle Control."
"All right," said Keith. "Allura, you can find the team and then I'll find you all later."
Coran was uncomfortable with Keith addressing the princess as "Allura." Keith had seldom ever done that and that time was the first Coran had heard Keith do it so casually. He and Keith walked together to the Castle Control without talking along the way. Strangely, Nanny was also at Castle Control.
"Keith, Nanny and I have been concerned about the princess," stated Coran.
Keith suddenly felt anxiety well up inside him, seeming to first start in his stomach and then rush to every other part of him. He wondered if Coran and Nanny somehow already knew what was going on between him and Allura.
"What do you mean?" asked Keith.
Coran hit a button on a control panel and looked down at a screen scrolling down the words of a document, a record Keith had made of the last battle they had with Planet Doom.
"I read over your report," said Coran, "and I let Nanny read it also. At first we were gravely disappointed with your decision during the battle to destroy the robeast before rescuing the princess, but we both realized since then that you did make the right decision. You've always made your decisions in the best interest of the planet, the people, and our dear princess, and the last battle was no exception except for the difficulty of the decision you had to make. That's not what we brought you here to talk to you about. I guess I'm dwelling on it because it wasn't my place to question your decision during battle."
"Coran, it's all right. You weren't out of line," said Keith.
"What we're concerned about is ..."
"How is the princess?" interrupted Nanny, her accent on her voice as usual. "She didn't look well at all when she came back."
Coran continued, "Your report stated that she experienced shock trauma and when Lotor tried to escape with her off his ship during the team's rescue attempt, the princess stopped him by shooting him herself with his laser gun. Is there something else that happened? She's been so withdrawn."
Keith was relieved that they apparently didn't have any suspicions of anything going on between him and the princess. "No, that's basically all that happened. It was a very traumatic experience for her, but she seems to be recovering well from it."
"Yes, she did seem better when I saw you with her just before we came here," commented Coran dubiously. "Thank you, Keith, that will be all."
Keith nodded his head to Coran in affirmation and left Castle Control to go find Princess Allura and the rest of the team.
Before Keith found her, Allura came across Lance in one of the castle halls. As she approached him, she put her arms up and blocked him against the wall.
"You! You did it, didn't you?" stated the princess.
"Did what?" asked Lance baffled and shocked.
"You must have said something to Keith."
"Yeah ..." said Lance cautiously.
"Oh, thank you!" And suddenly Allura kissed Lance on the cheek which only further astonished and confused him as he immediately turned red. Allura took back her arms and clasped her hands up by her face.
"You've made me the happiest woman in the universe!" she said as she pulled her arms down to her sides. "How'd you know that that's what else was on my mind?"
Lance smiled. "After what happened between you two yesterday, what else would be on your mind?"
Allura laughed. "I guess you're right."
"So what happened? What'd he say?"
"We'll let you know when we find the others," said Keith who had just found them.
"Keith!" exclaimed Allura and she ran over to him and wrapped her arms around his neck as he put his arms around her waist, and they kissed. When they stopped they both looked at Lance.
"Well, that gives me an idea of what happened," said Lance.
"Let's find the others and you'll get all the details, Lance," said Keith.
They all started walking together to find the others.
"What did Coran want?" Allura asked Keith.
"Do Coran or Nanny know about you two yet?" interrupted Lance in an urgent tone.
"No!" said Keith and Princess Allura emphatically at the same time.
"We decided that we owe it to the team to let all of you know about it first," said Allura.
"That and the fact that you both know Nanny and Coran are going to go ballistic on you when they find out," said Lance.
"Why was it that Coran wanted to see you?" the princess asked Keith again.
"Nanny was also there. They were just concerned over how you've been lately and wanted to know if something else had happened yesterday that I didn't include in my report."
"Like a kiss?" added Lance humorously.
"I don't think that's what they were suspecting," answered Keith knowing that Lance already knew that.
"You know, you can't blame them for being so concerned," continued Lance. "I mean, the way we all looked and acted yesterday must have gotten them thinking that something really horrible must have happened and the details of the report didn't quite match our reactions. Of course, that kiss explains everything. You really should have put that in the report, Keith."
"Right, Lance," said Keith. "Do you have any idea where Hunk and Pidge are?"
"Well the front balcony has been a popular place today, but this is about the time of day that Hunk always takes a nap, so I'll bet that they're in our room."
"Then let's check it out," said the princess.
They went to the room all the boys of the team slept in, and sure enough, there was Hunk on the lower bunk and Pidge was laying on the bunk just above him. Hunk saw Lance and didn't budge, but then he saw Keith and the princess.
"Hey!" exclaimed Pidge sitting up.
"Keith. Princess," acknowledged Hunk sitting up somewhat astonished since the last he saw them was when they were riding in from the hillsides together.
"Don't I get any recognition?" asked Lance sarcastically.
"Yeah, hi, Lance," said Hunk in a thoughtless manner and still focused on Keith and the princess.
"Sooo..." said Pidge. "What's happened?"
"Keith and I decided that the team deserved to know first that..." Allura paused and Keith put his arm around her pulling her close to his side and she held him close and rested the side of her head on his chest.
"Allura and I are getting married," announced Keith.
The whole team was shocked, but happy.
"You already asked her to marry you?" asked Lance astounded.
"How do you know he was the one who asked?" asked Allura.
"You asked him?" asked Lance sounding even more shocked.
"No, I didn't," answered Allura and laughed a little.
"I didn't see the sense in waiting any longer and I didn't want to lose her to someone else," said Keith.
"As a princess, one of my worst fears has been a fear of marrying someone out of obligation and not out of love. I love you, Keith." And she leaned up and kissed him.
"I love you, Allura." And he kissed her.
"So Coran and Nanny don't know yet," said Pidge rhetorically.
"Nooo!" exclaimed both Keith and Allura at the same time with a little more emphasis than when they had first answered that question for Lance.
"How are you going to tell them?" asked Hunk.
"When are you going to tell them?" asked Lance.
"How should we go about doing that, Allura?" asked Keith.
"It makes me so mad when I think of how I know they're going to react over this. They respect you as an excellent soldier, Keith, and that's it. But, you're so much more than that. You've got more diplomatic skills and a sense of etiquette than any prince I've ever known. And any good king is also an excellent soldier."
"Sense of etiquette?" questioned Lance. "Well I suppose he does in situations that call for social etiquette. Although I still don't think that's a fitting description of him. But what's this about being King? Keith can never be King."
"If a king marries a woman who's not a princess she still becomes queen, so in my mind there's no reason why Keith shouldn't be king when he marries me."
"Except that it just doesn't work that way," said Lance.
"I will find a way a to make it work that way," emphasized Allura. "As for Coran and Nanny, there's no good way to tell them the news. We'll just need to tell them and stand our ground on our decision. Lance, Hunk, Pidge, you're all my best friends and I'd like you to be there when we tell Coran and Nanny if you don't mind and that it's also all right with Keith."
"It'll save time on telling them the details later," said Keith. "And with everyone there, they might think everyone is hearing the news for the first time. It could help diffuse the situation."
"Then let's go," said Allura.
They all went to the Castle Control room where they found Coran, but Nanny was gone.
"Coran, I'd like Nanny here," said Allura. "There's some news we'd like to share and she should hear."
"All right," said Coran wondering what could be going on. He called Nanny to come to Castle Control. Soon she came walking in.
"What do you need, Coran?" asked Nanny somewhat irritated. "I was right in the middle of...Princess, it's good to see you! Are you doing better now?"
"Wonderful, Nanny!" she said. "I've had you called here for an announcement. Coran, Nanny, the day you have looked forward to, the day you have pressured me about, is finally here. I've chosen to get married."
"That's wonderful princess!" exclaimed Nanny. "Who is the prince?"
Coran was not so excited. He seemed to sense what was going on and Keith so casually calling the princess Allura was still fresh in his mind. Coran's mouth was part open with shock as he stared at Keith menacingly. Keith noticed and was a little uncomfortable with the stare as he casually shifted weight on his feet.
"Keith," said Allura. "Keith and I are to be married."
Coran closed his mouth. He was no longer shocked, just angry, and he continued to glare at Keith.
"Keith?" questioned Nanny. "Prince Keith from where?"
"That's Captain Keith of the Voltron force," replied Allura.
Nanny let out a moan of disdain.
"Keith!" roared Coran. "How could you let her do this? Talk some sense into her right now!"
"I did, Coran," said Keith calmly with confidence. "I asked her to marry me. Nothing makes more sense than that."
Coran was silent and then looked down toward the floor, deep in thought.
"Princess, you don't belong with this commoner," said Coran looking up and directly at the princess.
"Coran," said Keith raising his voice. "I am not a commoner and I resent the label being used on anyone. I am the one the princess loves and I love her and the people of this planet. No man has a sense of duty to these people more than I do. I am captain of the Voltron force and more than that, I am fit to rule this planet. Allura and I belong together. She is my queen."
"Coran, there is no prince better qualified to rule with me than Keith," said Allura.
"He's not a prince!" yelled Coran. "He can't be king! And he won't marry you!"
"He will be King," said Allura. "There has to be a way."
"The people will never accept him," said Coran more calmly.
"They will have to accept him. He's my choice."
"I see I can't change your mind," said Coran looking down. "And, although it goes against all logic, I must admit that in my heart I know it's the right thing to do."
"Coran, no," said Nanny. "The princess deserves better than this filth, this ruffian, Keith."
"Nanny, this planet doesn't deserve Keith," said Coran looking at Nanny and then over to the princess. "But fortunately, because of our princess, this planet will have him as our King!"
"Nooo!" exclaimed Nanny.
"Oh, Coran!" exclaimed the princess enveloping him in her arms around his neck and kissing him on the cheek. "Thank you for understanding. Your wisdom means so much to me!"
Then the princess turned to Nanny and took Nanny's hands in hers. "Nanny, please understand."
Nanny suddenly hugged Allura. "My princess, I've never seen you so happy. It's got to be the right thing to do." Allura was happy as she continued Nanny's hug.
"I need to make an announcement to the people," said Allura turning toward Coran.
"Before you do that, you need to find the evidence that justifies to your people that Keith should be king," said Coran.
"That's right," said Allura in a tone that affirmed that was her plan. "We'll need to get on that right away. Pidge, Hunk, Lance, could you help also?"
"I'm game," said Pidge.
"Me too," said Hunk.
"Time's a wastin', let's hit the books!" said Lance and he headed out of the Castle Control room and for the castle library with Pidge, Hunk, Keith, and Princess Allura following just behind him.
Commentary: In this story I think it'd definitely be more romantic to have Allura riding back to the castle while sitting in Keith's lap as General Fererik portrays in the picture I used for Keith and Allura: The Proposal, but I'll leave it like it is. As the reader, you can definitely imagine otherwise. Haven't seen evidence in the animated episodes that Keith documents the battles they have. But, it made sense to me that he would do that, so I used it. I've seen an episode where it appears the boys share a room, and I've seen an episode of them each having their own room. Perhaps they started out with their own rooms, but later decided it best to all be in the same room. Hunk and Pidge were not in bunk beds in the animated episodes, but I used it because it seems to fit them well. Coran seemed to warm up to the idea of Keith and Allura possibly being together in the second season of the animated series. But I thought Coran and Nanny would still be stuck on the dream of the notion of a wondrous prince coming to marry Allura. And, that the reality of Keith and Allura actually being together would really anger Coran at first. He displayed very set ways of his idea of marriage for Allura in the Planet Balto episode. I don't remember there being a library in the castle, but I figured it must have one. I guess everything could be on computer, and a library isn't really needed. But I still figured there would be one so I used one.
