Defending Earth

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

While the Vehicle Voltron force was on their way to a victory over a robeast on Arus, the Lion Voltron force continued to grapple with uncertainties concerning defending Earth.

"Hunk, you were right that the transmission from Jeff might have been a trick, and perhaps even the message from Coran was a fake," commented Allura. "But if we’re honest with ourselves, I’m sure we all realize we’re too far away to make it back to help Arus. We’ve got to believe that the Vehicle Voltron force wouldn’t let us down, and we’d be letting them down if we turned around."

"Exactly," agreed Keith who had been wrestling with those same issues in his mind only to come to the same conclusion that Arus was too far away, and Earth must be saved.

"You’re right," said Hunk. "There’s no sense in wondering about the ‘what ifs’ because we can’t do anything about it anyway even if the worst was true."

"Everyone be ready now," ordered Keith. "We’re nearing Earth."

Lance wasn’t concerned over the idea that the transmissions could be a trick. In his mind he was confident that they were legitimate because he didn’t sense anything suspicious about them. But, he didn’t say anything. He didn’t want or expect Keith to base a decision on him having a hunch that everything was OK. If he had a feeling that something was wrong, he probably would have said something.

Pidge also wasn’t concerned. He had had contact with his twin brother Chip (fraternal twins). He couldn’t imagine that his brother would have gone back to the Explorer, even if they were direct orders from Jeff.

As they entered Earth’s atmosphere, Doom forces were already nearing the populous Garrison City where the Galaxy Garrison building towered above all the other skyscrapers.

Allura gasped when she saw where they were headed. "No, all those people!"

Then an armada of Earth’s attack forces was launched from different military bases near the edges of the city.

"That’s Marshall Graham for you," commented Keith. "Counting on the element of surprise to give him an edge, but of course not waiting to the point that it puts the city in peril."

"Why do you think he hasn't contacted us at all?" asked Lance.

"I’m sure he’s got good reasons involving not compromising his battle tactics," answered Keith.

Actually, Keith knew that the real reason had to be because contacting Keith would potentially bring out emotions in the Space Marshall that could interfere with his decisions. Keith knew the sight of him would always be a reminder to Marshall Graham of the death of Keith’s godparents during battle and of the mission he had sent Keith’s parents on, after which they had never been found. The current battle situation would only make those feelings of guilt and remorse stronger. It was not a time for Marshall Graham to be having contact with Keith.

"Voltron force," continued Keith after a pause, "prepare to dismantle. We’ll fight this battle best as separate lions. Ready. Deactivate interlocks and disengage."

The process was successful without any adverse affects. When Voltron was first forced to disassemble into the lions, he almost destroyed himself. But given the time to do the process properly, there were no problems.

Earth’s forces were attacking the forces of Doom head on, while the lions were efficiently picking off the Doom fighter from the flank. However, it was all just a decoy as to what the plans of Doom really were. As the battle to destroy the Doom fighter ships began, the large Doom flag ship slipped away to pursue its true target. Darah was angry that her expertise wasn’t being used to focus a crippling attack on the Galaxy Garrison building itself.

"Look, that’s not really why we’re here," emphasized Lotor. "I don’t care what kind of expertise you have, with our limited fire power, it wouldn’t make a dent on Galaxy Garrison."

"Then what about Voltron?" questioned Darah.

"What about Voltron?" Lotor retorted right back.

"Isn’t the plan to weaken or destroy this Voltron so the empire can unite its forces and destroy the other Voltron as well?"

"We’re not here for that either. But, Voltron’s defenseless home planet is being dominated as we speak. Voltron is doomed to nothing to protect when it gets back."

"Wait a minute. The Alliance won’t let Voltron go to waste. If it’s not used to protect other planets in your area, it will be used with the other Voltron to protect the Galaxy Alliance mission to find new planets to populate. You fool! That will weaken the empire!"

"Not in our area it won’t."

"Augh!" exclaimed Darah as anger continued to well up hotter inside her. "If you won’t do anything for the empire, I will!"

Hagar was just walking into the room and heard Darah’s last sentence. After that, Darah stormed out of the room walking passed Hagar like she wasn’t even there.

"Lotor, what’d you do?" demanded Hagar.

"Nothing. She doesn’t even know why we’re really here."

"Of course she doesn’t. You didn’t think that the empire would have allowed her to come to help settle a personal matter of revenge for the King’s spoiled son did you? Not even direct orders from King Zarkon would convince Darah or her superiors to do that. Now what did you do?"

"We don’t need her anyway."

Hagar saw a lone droid fighter ship moving away from the main ship. "No! She’s left!" complained Hagar. "Lotor, you fool! Now we’ll need to complete the mission without her."

"What’d we really need her for anyway?"

"It doesn’t matter now. We’ll continue on as planned as best we can. You’ll need to safely make it there and back again. With the ensuing battle, they’re unlikely to notice your departure. Do you think you can at least handle that?"

"Don’t insult me, you old witch. Of course I can."

"Then go. And don’t mess it up!"

Lotor got into his own personal jet-like fighter ship, the Revenge, and left the main ship to find Keith’s childhood home and his sister.

Keith noticed Lotor’s departure from the battle scene.

"Allura," said Keith, "you’re in command. I’m going to check out what Lotor’s up to. Inform me right away if we need Voltron."

"Right, Keith," replied the queen.

The lions continued to destroy Doom fighters from the flank, and Galaxy Garrison forces continued their head on defense as Keith left the scene in pursuit of Lotor.

Hagar noticed the captain’s departure to follow Lotor. "Oh great," she said sarcastically, half aloud to herself and half aloud to her blue devil cat, Coba. "What else could go wrong?" Then she deserted the battle to make sure that Keith didn’t foil their main reason for attacking Earth in the first place.

Commentary: Go here for more information regarding Galaxy Garrison. Yes, in the animated series, Pidge and Chip are twins, though obviously not identical. More can be read about Tammy in the story Short One Lion. In an animated episode of Voltron, it'd been once said that the first time Voltron was forced to separate into the lions, he almost destroyed himself. I'm thinking that first time must have been when he met up against Hagar who had disguised herself as a goddess and forced Voltron to separate into the lions. At sometime before that, Voltron was all one and wasn't meant to be separated into the lions. I had fun writing about that in a story I haven't typed yet -- explaining why Alfor would create the five lions (and he did create them, not Hagar) and then suddenly decide they had to remain as one in Voltron, before even ever flying separately on their own, but actually put together as one for their first flight meaning to stay that way. My explanation was that all of a sudden, only a single pilot was available when the time was needed. The situation being so dire that Alfor thought Voltron may even be needed to be flown by remote control -- hence why some of Voltron's functions in the animated series were revealed by Coran as being able to be activated by remote control (Omega Comet episode). But also in the series it showed that Voltron could be separated into the lions successfully without ill effects when given the time to do so properly, and I used that proper sequence in the story above.. Though the obvious is that of course they had to for getting the lions back to their individual dens. The close personal ties Keith has with Marshall Graham, I just created for the purposes of my stories. No such relationship has been revealed in the animated series, but it also doesn't negate the possibility. From what I understand of the animated series, Zarkon is considered King of the Drule Empire but at the same time and outlaw of the empire. I have yet to type the story I wrote that has an explanation of how both can be true. You can read a little more details about Zarkon in the commentary of Plan for Lotor's Revenge. I purposely left out the specific details about what Hagar had planned to use Darah for. Since Lotor had spoiled the plans, it didn’t matter anyway.
