Doom and Darkness United Again

Pictures of Lotor and Merla from James Mallinson's Site
Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

Shortly after the wedding ceremony of Keith and Allura, Lotor’s heart burned to have revenge against Keith. He knew the wedding had occurred, but a part of him didn’t believe it. He despised the turmoil of emotions going on inside of him. He wanted to destroy the soft petty part of him that wasn’t accepting the truth. He talked Witch Hagar into replaying the wedding event for him to see on her crystal ball. She had sent Kitty to spy on the event just to assure herself that it actually happened. Not even Lance or the space mice had noticed the blue cat while he looked on discretely through a light blue piece of a stained glass window just above the church’s entrance doors.

As Lotor viewed the events of the wedding, his face showed no expression except for a non-changing look of being angry. Suddenly a single tear trailed down Lotor’s right cheek at the moment he saw Keith and Allura kiss after exchanging rings. The expression on Lotor’s face hadn’t changed, although with the shedding of a tear Lotor was shedding with it all of his feelings at that moment of feeling hopeless over possessing Allura. For Lotor that awful moment of seeing Keith and Allura kiss seemed like a heart tearing eternity. But eternity passed for Lotor when he was a little startled by the flash of Allura’s wedding ring and it suddenly appearing on her right hand after disappearing from her left. Both shock and rage welled up inside of Lotor as he saw Keith easily lift Allura in his arms and kiss her again. Lotor knew full well the extent and permanence of Keith’s injury, and knew that the feat should have been impossible.

“What just happened?” roared Lotor through partly clenched teeth, as he was enraged with jealousy. He glanced at his own mechanical arm and clenched the hand in anger. Keith had taken his arm and what little satisfaction Lotor had retained over causing Keith’s injury was now gone. Keith was whole again, but Lotor knew he never would be.

“I don’t know,” answered Hagar.

Lotor turned and faced her. “What do you mean, you don’t know? Is it some kind of magic?”

Witch Hagar’s mouth dropped open for a moment, astounded to see Lotor’s moist right cheek. Tears from Lotor were unheard of. Then she answered, “It’s magic. It came from the ring. But I don’t recognize the ring or where it came from. I don’t understand what happened.”

“He’s completely healed, isn’t he?”

“Yes.”

”How will I have revenge on him now? And, what else can that ring do?”

“Not to worry, Sire. The ring has little magic. What magic it has is uncontrollable and practically useless.”

“And how do you know that?”

“A witch knows. And, rest assured my prince; my plan for your revenge on Keith has not been affected by the captain’s miraculous recovery. You will have your revenge.”

On top of Lotor’s rage, his broken heart expressed by his tear had filled his thoughts with a hopeless feeling of apathy that he needed to be married. And that is what his feelings had become over his loss of Allura. He didn’t care anymore so he felt the urge that he might as well be married. Logically his mind was thinking over who would be most suitable. During his fit of rage with Hagar, Princess Corral (Click here for more information) of Planet Demos was who his mind was considering.

“Lotor, I want my revenge for you, too.”

Lotor knew that voice. His thoughts quickly turned from Corral to the person who had just spoken, and he thought to himself, “Ah yes, even better.”

“Merla,” said Lotor affectionately with surprise as he turned toward where she had been standing since when he began to view Hagar’s crystal ball, but until she had spoken he hadn’t noticed her standing there.

“The Voltron force talks of being good and yet they tried to kill you,” began Queen Merla. “If that’s what being good is, then I see no difference between good and evil. I’d rather be evil and take what I want. There’s no sense in pretending to be good. That’s all good is anyway, is pretending and hoping that somehow that will get you what you want.”

Lotor was enamored by how perfect a choice Merla seemed to be. He couldn’t understand why their marriage didn’t work before. (Note: Lotor and Merla were married in the cartoon series of Voltron, but it was broken off.)

“Merla, marry me,” said Lotor.

Witch Hagar’s mouth dropped wide open.

“What?” asked Merla, not believing her ears. It was so sudden and out of context with the whole conversation.

“Marry me, Merla. We’re perfect for each other.”

“L-Lotor,” stammered Merla. “Yes, I love you. I know that now. But…”

“Will you marry me? This time we’ll make it last.”

Merla had realized strong feelings of love for Lotor ever since she had found out he had almost died at the hand of Princess Allura. But Merla had clung to the ideals of being good because she also had feelings for Keith and deeply respected him. But, after she knew what Keith had tried to do to Lotor, she despised Keith. Then her only love was for Lotor and it was stronger than any love she had ever felt for a man. She sensed that his feelings for her weren’t as strong, but she wanted him.

“Yes, Lotor, I’ll marry you. And this time we’ll make it last.”

Lotor walked over to Merla and she felt like melting in his arms as he kissed her. Lotor pretended as if her cold lips were warm.

Witch Hagar smiled, delighted that it seemed that Lotor was finally getting on with his life. King Zarkon felt the same way when he was informed of the news.

That very same day, a ceremony of marriage was performed, calling upon the blessings of the evil gods. Then Lotor and Merla officially belonged to each other. Merla retained her title of queen, but was not Queen of Planet Doom because Lotor wasn’t King of Planet Doom and would remain “prince” until the death of his father. Queen Merla was technically just Princess of Planet Doom until Lotor would be king. Most always she went by her title as the Queen of Darkness.

Commentary: In the animated series, it last shows Merla as being on the side of good, helping the Voltron force. I liked it better with her as a bad character, and so I created reason for her to turn back to helping forces of evil. In the animated episodes I don’t recall Hagar ever “replaying” an event that had already happened on her crystal ball. But, I decided that it’d be something she could do, so I used it. I made up what the entrance to the church would look like. The cartoon episode “Sleeping Princess” of Allura’s funeral showed the church, but I don’t remember it showing great detail of what the entrance looked like. (It’s interesting that the bell of the church looks just like the bell of the second castle of Arus. Just reusing of footage of course, but still very interesting that a castle would have a bell!) Lotor’s arm isn’t like the mechanical one in Voltron the Third Dimension. For more detail, read the commentary at the bottom of Wedding Terror. Don’t know really how unheard of tears are from Lotor, but I never saw him shed a tear in the animated series. However, I did think watching Allura marry Keith would be just the thing to do it! I had confusion over trying to figure out whether Lotor and Merla had really been married in the animated series or not. They were married in a cartoon episode with Zarkon as the officiator. My confusion came in later after the marriage had been broken off. As Merla thought back on the marriage in another episode she referred to it as an “engagement.” An engagement is a term for people during a waiting period before they are married, but it can also refer to any event. Apparently she was using the term to refer to the wedding as an engagement, an event. I saw little evidence in the cartoons of Merla being attracted to Keith (or vice versa). I got the idea from things I’ve read other places from Voltron fans and decided it’s not unimaginable for Merla to have an attraction to Keith. It worked to use it in this story so I used it. According to the cartoons, Merla’s lips are cold as mentioned by Lotor just after their wedding. It was interesting in the series once when Merla was massaging Zarkon’s shoulders, he didn’t notice when Hagar suddenly switched with her. Hagar’s hands are ice cold, so that episode suggested that Merla’s body temperature is similar. I don’t remember exactly how the wedding ceremony between Lotor and Merla was in the animated series. At first I wrote it to be a godless marriage, but was later reminded that even Zarkon looks for favor from the evil gods in the cartoons. So I rewrote the scene to include the evil gods. Other changes I’ve made to this story are very minor. The details of the actions of Keith and Allura against Lotor that had caused Merla to lose respect for them can be found in the stories Keith and Allura: The Kiss and Wedding Terror.
