Merla’s Sacrifice

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

At the time Lion Voltron force had returned to Arus, Merla was hiding out on the planet, thoroughly disgusted over Vehicle Voltron destroying the robeast that was to do away with Arus’s insubordination to Planet Doom. She was scheming hard over what she could do to claim victory over the situation instead of failure. She wanted to get rid of Vehicle Voltron for good before it left.

Back on Planet Doom, Hagar and Lotor had arrived at close to the same time the Voltron force had made it back to Arus. Hagar and Lotor arrived only to find themselves wondering where Merla was.

“She failed to conquer Arus, as you fools always do,” Zarkon told them from high upon his throne. “What do I care where she’s at?”

Back on Arus, Merla was seething over the sight of the safe return of Lion Voltron. But soon she realized the opportunity for getting rid of both Voltrons at one time, and she had an idea for doing it.

“I’ll do it, Merla,” said her vulture who could read her thoughts and was perched on her shoulder.

“No!” declared Merla dismally. “You can’t!”

The bird flew off Merla’s shoulder, turned itself around, and perched on her right arm to face her. There he just stared at her.

“Very well,” she consented.

“Are you sure?” asked the vulture. “You know the risks.”

“The consequences are well worth it!” she spat as she stared off toward the Castle of Lions.

“Hurry then, before one leaves, and I’ll rid the universe of them both,” urged the vulture, and then he jumped to the ground and turned and looked back at Merla.

Then she began her incantation, “All powers of darkness, I call upon you to come to me now, your queen and ruler. I order the transfer of power through me to the one who protects me.”

Merla stood straight as she spoke with her arms stretched down at her sides and her palms up. Then a shadow began to cross over her as though the sun was going behind the clouds, but it wasn’t and Merla was the only being overshadowed. The shadow covering her grew darker. Merla brought her hands out in front of her, apart from each other as though they were holding a ball. Then a dark smoky substance began to appear in a swirl between her hands. She grabbed onto the dark smoky swirl and a wind seemed to blow from it in all directions.

"Now!" she ordered.

A black energy charge shot out from the swirl she held and then the swirl was gone, but black energy continued pouring out of Merla from the palms of her hands as it was all going into its target, Merla's vulture. The bird merely stood there as if nothing was happening and remained unchanged. As the black energy continued to pour out of Merla, the natural color of her skin began to come back. When her skin was normal again, the black energy was gone, and Merla's eyes even closed as she crumpled to the ground, overcome by the feeling of being drained. She was still conscious as she lay there, exhausted on the ground. Just after she had fallen, she heard a terrifying whisper brush by her left ear as if carried on a death cold breeze, "Darkness is not ruled, but bought for a price," it told and then it was gone.

The message terrified Merla to her core. She opened her eyes revealing a wild panicked look as soon as the message was over. But there was nothing horrifying to be seen, and she soon found comfort at the sight of her vulture standing beside her, protectively gazing down at her.

"You've escaped the powers of darkness unscathed, but not untouched," he said.

Merla happened to glance at her left hand resting on the ground just in front of her. The sight of it appalled her. She instantly sat up and staggered back in a sitting position using her feet and other hand, as if she could get away from her own left hand. Then she stopped and calmed down somewhat as she continued to stare at it. The back of her left hand had ugly raised black veins running through it, but they disappeared into normal at her arm.

"Show no fear of it, Merla, lest darkness take a hold on you," said the vulture.

Merla then glared at her hand, suddenly indignant over what had happened to it. Then the appearance and texture of the hand retuned to normal.

"Don't be fooled. It's not gone. It's just not showing," her vulture further disclosed.

"All this," she said while glaring at her then normal looking hand, and then looked over at the vulture, "and you haven't changed."

"Oh, but I have."

After saying that, the vulture suddenly began to rapidly enlarge. Merla quickly stood up and began walking backwards, gawking at the vulture in awe as he became more and more immense. Before he stopped growing, he was even taller than Voltron. By then Merla had gotten her composure back. She was standing tall as she was quietly anticipating the vulture leaving to destroy the Voltrons. Soon the vulture spread his wings and took off straight up into the air and then headed in the direction of the Castle of Lions.

Commentary: In the animated series it was revealed that Merla's vulture knew when someone was thinking bad thoughts about her. Based on this I figured that it makes sense that her vulture can also read any of her thoughts and I used that idea in this story. In the series, Merla could read other's thoughts so I have it that she can also read her vulture's thoughts. Her vulture did talk to her once in the animated series. In this story I've got him talking a lot. In the animated series, Merla's vulture was never revealed as having a name. In my fiction I choose not to give him a name either. I wanted to create a story where I could have both Voltrons fighting together similar to the animated episode "Fleet of Doom." At one time ideas of having the story The White Lion be the story when this happened went through my mind. But it just wasn't coming together right for me and I like my idea for this story better. I found it intriguing to try to create a believable situation during which Merla would be angry and confident enough to take a chance on making her own guardian vulture into a robeast. In the cartoons it revealed that Merla is cold to the touch. Witch Hagar is ice cold to the touch. So I came to the conclusion that Merla must have some contact with black magic and that's what causes her coldness. It's just an idea and I use it in this and other stories involving her or someone else with witchlike qualities. Originally I had planned the story A Robeast of a Different Intelligence as being part of this story, but because of length I made them into two stories. Then A Robeast of a Different Intelligence was also too long so I broke it into two stories. The other one being Battle of the Minds.
