Laurana and the Story of the Mud Monster

By Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

Planet Doom had recently sent two robeasts to attack Planet Arus. Voltron had destroyed them both. Because of the magnitude of the battle, the Voltron force knew that Planet Doom could not attack again with any significance that the castle defenses in themselves couldn't handle for at least a week. Because of this, the team and their families were granted leave with Voltron to visit Planet Pollux for a couple days. They were to take Voltron with them because if trouble did arise, they needed to be able to get to Voltron right away for Voltron to be any help at all. Everyone was especially looking forward to seeing Princess Romelle and Sven. On black lion was King Keith and his son Prince Mark also son of Queen Allura and was about 10 years old at the time. On blue lion was Queen Allura and Carla, Lance's wife (also Keith's sister). On yellow lion was Hunk, his wife Darla, and their son Bruce who was about 8 years old. On red lion was Lance and his son Nick who was just two days younger than Mark. And, on green lion was Pidge, his wife Tammy, and their son Dennis who was about 4 years old.

When the lions arrived on Planet Pollux, everyone was warmly greeted by Sven and Princess Romelle. Their daughter was still in the castle. The adults followed Sven and Romelle into the castle and the kids were allowed to roam the hallways.

While walking the halls, Nick was soon bored. "Hey, what if there are robeasts roaming the halls of this castle?" And suddenly Nick started walking backwards in front of the others and started waving his arms and making strange noises and faces trying to get them to laugh which was working. "I'm a robeast roaming the castle halls. Look, my hair is worms!" said Nick and he pulled on his hair pretending to throw worms at them.

Mark hadn't been laughing much because he found the behavior to be disrespectful of them as guests. "Nick, what do you think you're doing? You look stupid."

"Yeah, right. I'm just having fun!"

"Oh, yeah. What would you think if I started acting like that?" Suddenly Mark started walking backwards waving his arms and making strange faces and sounds. Nick turned back around and walked beside Bruce and Dennis. They were all laughing hysterically because Mark never acts that way. "I'm a robeast drowning in Nanny's wash bucket!"

Suddenly, Mark's three friends stopped with their eyes open wide and their mouths gaping open. "What's the matter with you guys?" Then Mark bumped into someone and turned around and saw a beautiful girl (about 9 years old) with long curly golden hair and sparkling blue eyes wearing a floor-length beautiful pink gown. Suddenly, Mark collapsed to the floor.

"Wow, he fainted," said the girl with some shock and concern

Nick instantly got his composure back. "No he didn't. Mark doesn't faint, he's just pretending. Mark, get up." Nick walked over and nudged Mark's side with his foot. "Come on, Mark, joke's over, get up. Mark? Oh wow, he did faint!" Nick kneeled down beside Mark and started to slap his face a little to wake him up. "Mark, wake up! Mark! Wake up, Mark!"

Mark finally opened his eyes and looked up at Nick. "Nick, you wouldn't believe it. I had the strangest dream. It was so real! I dreamt that we all went to Planet Pollux and were were walking through the halls in the castle there and I saw this beautiful girl with long curly golden hair that must have went down to the back of her knees and she was wearing a beautiful dress . . ."

"Mark, you weren't dreaming," interrupted Nick.

"Hi," said the girl looking down at Mark from above Nick.

"Oh wow, I'm still dreaming," said Mark and he got to his feet.

"Mark, you're not dreaming," repeated Nick.

"Look, this has got to be a dream and I can prove it to you. Wait a minute, what am I proving it to you for? You're part of my dream! I'll prove it to myself. In my dreams I can always fly."

"Mark your not dreaming, you just fainted, and you better stop what you're doing before you really look stupid!"

"No, this has got to be a dream and I'll prove it to myself right now." Mark turned around away from the others and leaped forward into the air and fell flat on the floor. Everyone, except Mark, started laughing. "Ow. Oh no, I'm not dreaming!" Mark was bright red as he leaped back up to his feet and the others continued to laugh.

The laughter finally quieted down into giggles and then stopped when the girl spoke. "I'm Princess Laurana, daughter of Sven and Princess Romelle. Welcome to our castle on Planet Pollux."

Mark had gained his composure back and gestured to introduce his friends, "That's Dennis, Bruce, and Nick and I'm Mark."

"Prince Mark," Nick threw in with a smile which was returned by Mark with a menacing scowl that made Nick slightly cowell but was obviously delighted with Mark's discomfort due to him hinting at a match between Mark and the princess.

"Would you like a tour of the castle?" asked Laurana.

"Sure," said the boys.

"Follow me."

Laurana showed the boys various places within the castle including the castle control room.

"This is my room and that's my cat, Fluffy," she said as she led the boys inside. The room had a pink color scheme to it with lots of wooden figurines setting on the many shelves along all the walls. Mark sat on the bed and petted the long-haired white cat the foot of it.

"Wow!" exclaimed Nick picking up a figurine of Voltron off the shelf. "Who carved all these?"

"I did," said Laurana.

"You're good! What kind of tools did you use?"

"My fingernails."

Nick looked at Laurana and irritated with her statement glared at her a little. "Very funny. Now really, what kind of tools did you use?"

"I used my fingernails."

"Look, if you don't want to tell me what kind of tools you used, just say so."

"No, really, I use my fingernails. Hmmm, let me show you." Laurana looked around her room and took an untouched block of wood off one of her shelves. Then she took her right thumbnail (all of her fingernails were long and painted pink) and easily carved off a shaving of wood.

"Let me see that," said Nick grabbing the wood from her. He thought perhaps it was a trick piece of wood, but when he tried scratching into it himself, he realized it was real wood and one of the more solid types of wood. Then he looked straight over at Laurana with suspicious eyes and said "You're weird."

"Nick!" said Mark glaring at him and disappointed with his terrible manners.

"Well, she is!" exclaimed Nick.

Nick's comment did briefly bother Laurana because she did suspect that she was quite different from others, but she soon shook the feeling off and her discomfort was virtually imperceptible.

"Well, that was the castle," said Laurana.

"What could we do now?" asked Dennis.

"What's outside?" asked Bruce.

"It's getting dark out now," said Laurana.

"We could go out and build a campfire," said Dennis.

"The only way I get to go outside at night is if I sneak out. Dad wouldn't let us go outside and I wouldn't want any of you to get into trouble. If we built a fire, we'd get caught for sure."

"Why don't you ask your mom instead?" asked Nick.

"I've learned not to bother. She always says go ask your dad and he'd never let us outside at night even if all your parents didn't care."

"Our parents don't mind much what we do just as long as we get permission from someone," said Mark. "Going outside at night does sound like fun and I guess the permission we need to get will have to be from Sven. So, let's go ask."

"He'll just say no," said Laurana.

Mark gave Nick a sly look and said "We'll see." Then they all left together to go talk to Sven.

"He's not going to let us go out," said Laurana to Mark.

"Oh yeah he will," said Mark. "Nick can make sure of that."

"How's he going to do that?"

"Look, there he is," said Mark pointing just ahead.

They had found Sven taking a temporary break from the other adults.

"Dad, the boys want to go outside tonight and make a campfire. Is it all right if we all go do that?"

"Laurana, you know you can't go outside at night. There's vild animals out there that can get you."

"What'd I tell you," said Laurana looking at the boys.

"Sven," said Mark. "We've been out at night on Planet Arus so our parents wouldn't care if we went out at night here."

"Mark, here on Planet Pollux there are dangerous animals out at night and I'm not allowing any of you outside."

"I guess we'll have to forget about doing that then," said Mark. "Let's go everyone and find something else to do."

"Why can't we go outside, Mark?" asked Nick.

Laurana gave Nick an incredulous look because surely he had heard her dad say why they couldn't go outside. Bruce and Dennis weren't surprised because they knew that Nick was just up to something as always.

"Sven says there's wild animals out there," answered Mark.

"What's wrong with wild animals?" asked Nick.

"Nick, the vild animals are dangerous at night," said Sven.

"But I don't get it. Why are they dangerous at night?"

"Vell, you see, Nick, the vild animals hunt for food at night and they'll eat vat they can get. Including you!"

"Really?" said Nick acting and sounding scared. "Where do they go during the day?"

"During the day they sleep."

"Woe, they're really dangerous during the day!"

"Nick, vat are you talking about?"

"Well if they're that dangerous at night then they must be really dangerous during the day when they're sleeping. At least at night they're all awake and they'll go after other wild tastier animals before they'd come after me even though it would still be dangerous for me to be outside. But during the day they're all sleeping and if I went outside during the day I'd be bound to wake at least one of them up and then it would be angry and kill me and eat me for sure! Wow, I'm fortunate to be alive! I used to go outside during the day all the time. I can't believe I did that! I'm never going outside during the day again. Thank you, Sven. You saved my life!" Nick turned to walk away.

"Nick," said Sven, "it's not that bad!"

"What?"

"The vild animals, they're not that bad."

"No, Sven, you said they were dangerous and I'm never going outside again -- especially not during the day!"

"Nick, really, it's not that bad. In fact you should go out with the kids tonight and you'll find out that the vild animals really vohn't hurt you."

"But Sven, you told us not to go outside at night because the wild animals will get us!"

"No, just go outside tonight vith your friends and build a campfire. That vill scare avay vat vild animals there are even though they vould'nt hurt you anyvay."

"Oh, I don't know. I don't think I want to go."

"Just go. Have fun. You'll find out that the vild animals are nothing to be afraid of."

"Well, ok. If you say so. But why did you say that the wild animals were dangerous?"

"I don't know what I was thinking. The vild animals are dangerous to each other, I suppose. Just go outside, Nick. Have fun. But go."

As the kids walked away Sven could hear Nick say, "I don't know, Mark, are you sure it's safe?" and was somewhat relieved when he heard Mark say in a slightly irritated tone, "Yes, Nick, I'm sure it's safe."

When they were long out of Sven's sight and hearing range Laurana said to Mark "I can't believe my dad fell for that! How'd he come up with all that stuff anyway?"

"He's good at it, always has been. You can count on Nick when it comes to stuff like that."

They stopped by Laurana's room and she went in and soon came out wearing a light blue jumpsuit. Then they all went outside and into the dark woods. Laurana showed them a good spot to start a fire and a bunch of flintstone to use. Each of them got a dry leaf going and then combined them together and slowly added more things that burned easily and worked their way up to using large logs of wood. Then they all sat around the fire and watched it.

"Now that I've got us out here, now what are we going to do?" asked Nick.

Laurana thought. "We could tell stories."

"Great," said Nick unenthusiastically. "Who's got a story?"

Mark was puzzled by how Nick was seeming to respond negatively to anything Laurana said and Bruce and Dennis also noticed.

Laurana thought some more. "Oh, I've got one!"

"This ought to be good," mumbled Nick sarcastically. Mark, Bruce, and Dennis all gave Nick a look of "why are you picking on her?" They didn't say anything, but they all gave him that look. Then Laurana began her story.

"Every night, on Planet Pollux, the mud monster rises up from the river bottom."

Nick didn't say anything, but he was sarcastically thinking to himself "Ooooo, mud monster, I'm so scared! Could she have thought of anything lamer!"

Laurana went on, "And every night when the mud monster rises up from the river bottom, it's hungry and searches for something to eat. It especially likes to eat people. Especially children! That's why on Planet Pullox, children aren't allowed to go out at night. One night when the mud monster rose up from the river bottom, the moon was full like the moon is full tonight. And when the moon is full the mud monster is especially hungry, especially for little children. But the mud monster knew it wouldn't find any children because the people on Planet Pollux keep their children in at night. So it went to search for what animals it could find. Then it saw a strange orange light off in the distance and wondered what it was. So it got closer until it saw that it was a campfire with five little children sitting around it, just like we are right now. But mud monster's aren't afraid of fires! So, it got closer and closer until . . . it-ate-them-all-up!"

Everyone jumped and then started laughing, all except for Nick. Finally Nick said, "That's the stupidest story I've ever heard!"

Laurana looked a little shocked and was trying to shake off feeling a little hurt. Mark, Bruce, and Dennis were all giving Nick a look of "What do you mean? That was a pretty good story. And why are you being so mean?" They didn't say anything, but they were giving him that look.

"How'd you come up with such a stupid story?" asked Nick. "Oooo, mud monster, I'm scared! That's so stupid!"

Then Mark, who was sitting between Nick and Laurana, got an idea and started rubbing his hand in the dirt. Laurana noticed and started to smile. Mark put a finger from his other hand up to his mouth to gester to Laurana to be quiet. Nick saw Laurana smiling.

"What are you smiling about? That's the stupidest story I've ever heard in my whole life!"

"Lahhh, aaaa, aaaaa," said Mark in monster-like sounds as he put his muddy hand out in front of Nick's face and slowly moved his fingers.

"Ahhhh, mud monster!" cried Nick and he jumped backwards and fell down into the dirt. Everyone, except him, started laughing. Nick got up and said "It wasn't funny."

Then they all just sat around the fire and chatted some more until they decided to put the fire out and go back to the castle to go to bed. Sven was happy that Nick was no longer afraid to go outside and when Nick's parents heard about it, they just looked at Nick suspiciously. The next day, the Voltron force and their families all went back to Planet Arus to be prepared for whenever Planet Doom would attack again.
