Rebellious Ginger

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

After Merla's vulture as a robeast had been defeated, Vehicle Voltron had been disassembled into its fifteen separate units, and all the pilots were standing outside near where Ginger had crashed. She was conscious and arguing with Jeff. The rest of the Vehicle Voltron force plus Sven stood scattered around nearby feeling some bemusement over the situation. Keith, Allura, Lance, Hunk and Pidge all landed their lions and disembarked to see how Ginger was. What they witnessed was her giving Jeff quite an earful.

"Look, Jeff, I'm fine!" argued Ginger.

"Ginger, you were knocked unconscious so badly that you didn't even come to when Sven was hauling you off to the safety of a cave," countered Jeff.

Then Lance asked Sven, "You hauled Ginger off into a cave and just left her there?"

"There vere people there to take care of her," defended Sven.

"Really. Where are they now?"

"They left."

"Oh yeah, that was real safe for Ginger," said Lance sarcastically.

"I mean they left after they had left Ginger vith us."

Meanwhile, Jeff and Ginger had continued arguing.

"Jeff I can fly!" insisted Ginger.

"We better combine into the Strato fighter on the way back to the Explorer until we know for sure you're OK," said Jeff smiling, half serious half not.

"I'm flying my own ship by myself!" demanded Ginger, fighting for a sense of dignity after missing battle because of being unconscious and being replaced by another pilot.

"You better let her go, Jeff," suggested Cliff in his Australian accent. "Who knows what she'll do to you later if you don't."

"Yes, in the name of self-defense for yourself, let her go, Jeff,” urged Crik in his water world accent.

"All right, Ginger," consented Jeff. "You're flying. But you're gonna get checked out by a doctor once we're back to the Explorer."

"Jeff, I told you I'm fine."

"Hey, don't take that up with me. You can argue that with Commander Hawkins when we get back."

"Oh . . ." said Ginger at a loss for words and embarrassed at even the thought of trying to argue something like that with Commander Hawkins. Her face flushed and she was quiet. Jeff was smiling from ear to ear that he embarrassed her and everyone else laughed a little.

Then Jeff addressed Keith and the rest of the Lion Voltron force by saying, "But really we've got to be getting back. We've got lots of exploring to catch up on."

Keith shook Jeff's hand and said, "Thanks for all your help, Jeff."

Allura then shook Jeff's hand and said, "Yes, thank you, Jeff." Then she addressed everyone on the Vehicle Voltron force. "Thank you, all of you. We couldn't have succeeded today without you."

"And thank you, Sven, for taking my place," said Ginger speaking up again.

"I had do Ginger," responded Sven. "The team vas at a loss vithout you."

Back on the Explorer, after Ginger had been checked out and okayed as recovering well from a moderate concussion, she was released on order to report back later for another check up to make sure she really was ok. It did turn out that she really was fine as she had reported all along.

Ginger stood on an observation deck staring out at the pinpoints of light in the darkness of space when Jeff approached and stood beside her.

"You've never reacted to me that way before like you did today," he said.

"Sorry, Jeff. I know I have a feisty spirit. But it's unlike me to argue like that, especially with you. You know I'd never do that in battle don't you? I certainly didn't mean to encourage any insubordination of you among the other members of the team."

"No one's lost any respect for me cuz of what you said. Actually I think everyone thought it was pretty funny. I've just never seen you be a rebel like that before or defy authority."

Ginger suddenly smiled as she continued to stare off into space and said, "I guess you've rubbed off on me a little." Then her expression turned more serious as she explained, "I guess I've never been in a situation where something happened to me and I had to be replaced by another pilot. It was embarrassing and I was mad!"

"Full of chagrin would well describe how you were acting,” commented Jeff smiling.

"Yeah," said Ginger in a quiet sort of far off tone.

Then they stood there a while longer, silently side by side, as they stared off into space.

Commentary: This was an after thought story. I thought there should be some sort of conclusion of how Ginger would react after she was conscious and found out she had been replaced in battle. I don't know for sure that Ginger had never spoken brashly with Jeff before like I have her do in this story. I'm taking a guess that she didn't do that in an animated episode. But I think it fits her personality that given the right circumstances she would go off on Jeff such as in this story. I know people often match Jeff with Lisa in their Voltron fiction, which I enjoy reading. But, in this story there's a slight hint of matching between Ginger and Jeff. I guess I saw quite a bit of hints between Ginger and Jeff in the animated episodes I happened to see and so far I've ended up reflecting that in my stories. One thing I've mentioned to someone before about Jeff and Ginger is that it's interesting how they both have annoying voices. Just another thing in my mind that makes them not such a bad match. I've read some fiction from Voltron fans that have Lance and Ginger involved in a relationship together. I hadn't recognized some of the similarities in their personalities until I had read about that and agreed to myself they could be a good match. Was tempted to put some sort of history between Lance and Ginger in my stories, but then decided not too. The concern Lance shows for Ginger in this story would have been opportunity for me to introduce some sort of past they may have had together. But instead, I just leave it that he was concerned about her. Maybe later I'll introduce that he has great respect for her impressive skills as a pilot, and in that respect there's some special kinship there.
