The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.
By the time Lion Voltron had returned to Arus, the Vehicle Voltron force was back aboard the space ship Explorer which was then orbiting the planet. The Explorer came because the 15 units of Vehicle Voltron needed to be recharged. It wasn’t sent to bring Voltron there in the first place because the Voltron units when combined into their three fighter ships would travel to Arus faster than if they had been transported by the Explorer. Or, at least the admiral at Galaxy Garrison in command at the time wanted to make it look like he was taking King Keith’s demand for protection of Arus seriously. What the admiral had neglected to realize was that Jeff would put his loyalties above the chain of command. Also the admiral never did completely realize the grave errors in judgment he was making.
Before the Explorer departed with Vehicle Voltron , its Voltron force had been allowed to return to Arus one more time in their Voltron units to say goodbye to the Lion Voltron force. All the pilots including Tammy, alternate pilot for green lion and Pidge’s girlfriend, were in the courtyard in front of the castle. Even their sixth Voltron pilot was there. Sven and Romelle had made a special trip from Planet Pollux for a chance for Sven to see his friends on the Vehicle Voltron force and for Romelle to meet them. Darah, the Drule Hunk had saved, was considered to be an untrustable guest and was being detained inside the castle until further decisions regarding her were made.
The Vehicle Voltron force landed their units scattered throughout the castle courtyard among their friends. Chip and Pidge immediately rushed to greet each other. Jeff first sought to greet Keith who was standing near the castle entrance. And everyone else was hitting it off greeting each other with what little time they knew they had.
Just after Jeff and Keith had hugged and shook hands, Coran came out of the castle approaching from behind Keith. He informed them that a call of great importance had just come from Galaxy Garrison requiring the presence of both Keith and Jeff. Keith and Jeff looked away from Coran and back at each other, both suspecting what the call was about. They left their friends and went inside to Castle Control, escorted by Coran. There they stood in front of a black screen that had been intentionally left that way until Coran left them alone in Castle Control so they would have their privacy. Then the image of the sender appeared on the screen.
“Marshall Graham, sir,” saluted Jeff.
Keith did not salute. It wasn’t appropriate for his stature as King of Arus to salute someone, especially while he was on his own planet.
“Your presence is an honor, sir,” greeted Keith. “To what do we owe the honor of your call?”
“It’s been brought to my attention that gross disobedience within the chain of command of our ranks has occurred involving the both of you and a certain admiral.
“I’d do it all over again, sir,” broke in Jeff. “And I’m prepared to take the consequences.”
“And, I think you’re well aware of my stand, Marshal,” stated Keith.
“I think I am too, Your Majesty,” stated Marshal Graham. Then he addressed them both, “I’m letting you both know this is a matter I’m not about to take lightly.”
Jeff and Keith both felt their stomachs bottom out. They both felt quite small before the Space Marshal they so highly respected and from whom they were expecting a full blow of reprimands. But, neither of them showed signs of those feelings except for a slight paling of their faces. For without apology, they were each sticking by that their decisions were correct. Both even felt a rage burning inside them against the marshal that he wouldn’t use his rank to override the injustice of the situation, though to do so would potentially undermine the military system as a whole.
The marshal continued, “I knew immediately after I heard the news what I needed to do.” Then a bemused smile suddenly came over the marshal’s face. Noticeable looks of being puzzled came over the faces of Jeff and Keith, mixed with a looks of anger over the marshal’s apparent glee of the situation.
The marshal went on, “ I just wanted to let you both know appropriate reprimands have been taken.”
Jeff and Keith suddenly both looked shocked. Expecting the worst, they had just been informed of what they both had secretly hoped for!
“That’s not funny, Marshal,” said Keith, knowing full well that the marshal had purposely set them up into thinking they were to be punished. What Keith didn’t know was that Marshal Graham had went so far as to call ahead to the Spaceship Explorer giving Commander Hawkins orders to let him know when the Vehicle Voltron force was back on the planet. That way the marshal knew w hen he could speak with Jeff and Keith together.
“Now Keith. You know it isn’t often that I lighten up. Don’t spoil the fun.”
Keith and Jeff looked at each other and smiled, and then both looked back at the marshal.
“So what actually happened to the admiral, sir?” ventured Jeff.
“Now that’s a subject of a more serious matter.” Then the smiles were gone from all their faces. Space Marshal Graham knew the once admiral he just had demoted didn't mean to be doing anything of disservice to the Alliance. The problem really was that from the beginning of them knowing each other the official had lacked proper respect for the marshal. The official knew the connection between Keith and Marshal Graham and saw it all as favoritism. The official's recent actions showed the marshal that the official still had a strong tendency to allow his sense of power and his hatred for what he views as favoritism to cloud his judgment. It was dangerous unprofessionalism that Marshal Graham didn't allow to go by without proper consequences. But all the marshal told Jeff and Keith was, “Suffice to say that I don’t want this to ever happen again. And, I trust you two won’t let your egos get the best of you.”
Keith smirked and said, “Oh, I don’t know about that, Marshal, considering the role model we’ve got.”
“Point taken,” said Marshal Graham formally while smirking right back at the King of Arus. Then the marshal signed off.
“Guess we got off scot-free on that one,” Jeff said to Keith.
“All for the good of the Alliance, Jeff,” commented Keith. “Only for the good of the Alliance.”
The two of them then left Castle Control and were on their way back to their friends just outside the castle. Coran promptly returned to Castle Control after they had left.
“Oh, by the way, Jeff, I’ve been wondering . . .” began Keith as they were walking through the castle hallways.
“What Keith?”
“When you and the rest of your teams were on their way to protect Arus, why didn’t you answer Coran’s hails? I hate to admit it, but we almost turned back because of that.”
“You haven’t figured that out?”
“Ah . . . no.”
“It’s because I knew that admiral would be watching our position by monitoring our communications. He had talked with me directly so I knew he had that lock. And how right I was! As soon as I had finally contacted Arus, that admiral was all over me. Even though there was a robeast, he was ordering me to go back.”
“Ahh, now that makes sense.”
Then they were just walking outside the castle where they would get to visit with the rest of their friends.
Commentary: This was an after thought story. I felt the need to write it story to bring closure to all the insubordination that went on the part of the Voltron captains to make sure Planet Arus was protected in the stories Earth Attacked!, Where's Arus's Defense?, and Defending Earth. Also wrote it to bring closure for why Jeff didn't contact the Castle of Lions sooner than what he did in Where's Arus's Defense? Had gotten a question as to whether the admiral making decisions that would cause Arus to be in severe danger was really working for Planet Doom. So I clarify in this story that no he's not a bad guy; he just lets a lot of personal issues affect his decision making process. I choose to leave that official nameless that has such personal problems over Keith and Marshal Graham just because I feel moved to write the story that way. I don't feel an urge have his name revealed. Therefore I don't even know his name because I've never given him one.
