A Robeast of a Different Intelligence

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

Back at the Castle of Lions, King Keith and Jeff had just come back out of the castle together to join their friends in the courtyard. Then Lance was the first to spot a robeast looming in the ever closer distance. His eyes began to grow to big in mild shock over the sight and then he said, "Looks like we've still got some work to do."

Everyone turned in Lance's direction to see what he was talking about. Then he said, "Now that was poor planning on the part of Planet Doom. We've got two Voltrons, but there's just one robeast."

"Together they can finish it off quick before any damage is done," said Tammy.

"Let's go Voltron force!" said Keith.

Before his team had turned and left into the castle to get to the elevators to take them to the lions, all 15 members of the other Voltron force announced together, "Go Voltron!" Then they rushed for each of their individual vehicle units. They were all launched and headed for the bird robeast before the lions were. But it was soon after that the pilots of the lions had also launched. Then all 20 Voltron ships were after the single robeast.

"I feel like we're going after a giant turkey," said Lance humorously to everyone on the Lion Voltron force.

"Don't compare that disgusting thing to food!" scolded Hunk. "I like turkey a lot, and you better not spoil it!"

"Well just look at it. It's even got a big bald head -- just like turkeys do."

"I said knock it off!" yelled Hunk, slamming his fists down in anger on the control panel in front of him.

"That's enough, Lance," Keith cut in. "We don't need Hunk punching any holes into his lion."

Lance didn't say anymore about it after that. He clearly remembered the time Hunk punched holes in the castle dining table without even trying. In fact he'd only gotten mildly upset over something.

"Everyone attack at once," ordered Jeff. "Then we shouldn't need to use Voltron."

After Vehicle Voltron would be formed, it would begin to lose its power after five minutes. Lion Voltron didn't have that problem, but it was routine for them to use the least amount of force necessary for resisting and defending against an enemy.

"Jeff,” said Crik, leader of the aqua team, "I'm getting really bad premonitions right now. There must be something really awful about that robeast that we don't know about."

"I'm getting them, too," confessed Cinda.

"There's not much we can do about that except be careful and defeat it as soon as we can," said Jeff.

The lion ships and the vehicle ships all converged upon the robeast at once and open fired. Everyone was completely baffled over how the robeast was blocking everything that anyone did, and any impact that was made was so minor it had no affect. All the shots from the robeast at the Voltron forces were almost always hitting their targets dead on. Even the shots that missed seemed as though there was some sort of strategic reason behind them.

Then blue lion became a focus of the robeast, leaving the other ships more free of danger. It was a good choice on the robeast's part since out of the five lions, blue lion had most of Voltron's energy. Queen Allura did what she could to avoid or block the onslaught of attacks coming upon her lion, but nothing she tried helped much.

"Allura, you've got to get out of there!" urged Keith.

"Ahhh!" she screamed after feeling the jolt of the next energy charge going through her ship. "Nothing I do seems to work! It's as if that robeast can read our minds!"

A brief feeling of horror went through Keith mixed with anger and a touch of helplessness as he suddenly realized that reading all their minds was exactly what the robeast was doing. Then he was filled with a fierce determination to do whatever it took to survive and be successful in that battle. His thoughts and feelings all passed in less than a second, and then he said, "Allura, we've got to get you out of there and form Voltron."

Keith's concern for the safety of others kept his love for Allura from completely overshadowing his thoughts. He made a quick call to Jeff as he began the task of trying to free Allura of the danger she was in.

"Jeff, that robeast can read our minds. It knows everything we're going to do before we do it!"

An onslaught of weaponry from the robeast was being fired upon Jeff's ship just before Keith's message came through. Communications hadn't been knocked out, but it did make it difficult for Jeff to understand what Keith was saying. But, at the same time, Keith had also sent the message so everyone on the Voltron forces could hear it. The robeast just knew that Jeff would be the one ordering the formation of Voltron and delaying that as long as possible was to the robeast's advantage. The robeast continued firing upon Jeff's ship while continuing a heavy barrage on Allura. With all the noise and feedback shocks Jeff was experiencing, he couldn't even begin to understand what Keith had tried to tell him. Then, a chance finally came for messages from the members of his own team to come through clearly. Jeff then understood what was going on. But, he still couldn’t do anything to begin the formation of Voltron because the robeast was still heavily firing upon him.

After sending Jeff the message, Keith began orders to his own team, "All right team," he started sounding calm although inside he was anything but calm, "we've got to go in after Allura and form Voltron right away."

The lions all flew in and did what they could to defend blue lion, finally freeing Allura from the situation. Then the lions started to get themselves into a resemblance of a formation with just green lion not quite there yet. The robeast took some attention off Jeff's ship to fire powerful blasts that made direct hits on green lion, knocking out its systems so it began free falling uncontrollably from out of the sky. Hunk immediately began pursuit to retrieve it.

"Hunk, quick, get green lion and we'll form Voltron in free fall," ordered Keith.

Hunk managed to scoop Pidge out of the air getting the green lion on the back of yellow lion. The lions were then flying in formation straight up high in the sky, but couldn't start the Voltron sequence yet with green lion out of place. The robeast took more attention off Jeff's ship and fired strong laser shots directly at green lion. When the lion Voltron force was quite high in the sky, shots fired by the robeast knocked green lion right off yellow lion's back. Green lion was plummeting for the ground again.

"Try to stop this, robeast," growled Keith, talking through clenched teeth, and then he ordered, "Mach dive! We'll catch up to Pidge and then form Voltron."

"Straight for the ground?" questioned Lance.

"Now!" commanded Keith.

Then all four lions dived straight for Pidge at the highest speeds they could attain in the shortest period of time. The robeast fired shots at all of them. He knew what the Voltron force was going to do. In his normal form, he could read others thoughts and always knew when someone was thinking bad thoughts about Merla; but in robeast form, the vulture's mind reading powers were all the stronger. But, knowing the lion Voltron force was going to going into a power dive in an attempt to form Voltron didn't help him know of a way to successfully stop it. The lions were going too fast for any of the robeast's weaponry to have an affect. Even when a lion happened to collide directly into what the robeast shot, it didn't matter. At that speed almost anything was as though the lions were fingers sailing through the middle of a candle flame unscathed, or incredible bullets sailing through anything unimpeded. The lions immediately slowed down to the speed of green lion's fall as soon as they caught up with it.

"Ready to form Voltron," said Keith as he initiated the sequence. The lions all pulled back up flying toward the sky. The energy of the Voltron sequence kept green lion in formation and pulled it up with them. The robeast could no longer attack the lions after Keith had initiated the Voltron sequence. The robeast knew this and turned it's attention back on Jeff's ship of the Vehicle Voltron force. But, Jeff had managed to get orders out to everyone to get ready to form Voltron as soon as they had a chance. He almost had that chance to break away, but then the robeast was concentrating its weaponry on him again.

When the lions had their formation in a good position in the sky, Keith continued on with the rest of the Voltron sequence, "Activate interlocks, dynotherms connected, infracells up, mega thrusters are go."

"Let's go Voltron Force!" announced everyone on the lion Voltron force.

Then Keith continued, "Form feet and legs. Form arms and body. And I'll form the head."

The lion heads then roared in succession and then all at once, ending the sequence for forming Voltron. Immediately the robeast then began firing its weapons at Voltron. Then Jeff finally broke away and announced, "Time to form Voltron."

The robeast knew it was coming, but wasn't fast enough to stop the process before it started.

Jeff continued, "Form feet and legs. Form arms and torso. And I'll form the head."

The robeast couldn't attack Vehicle Voltron while it was forming. But, there was a weakness it quickly discovered by reading people's thoughts. Ginger's ship, the red falcon fighter, connected onto Voltron last and wasn't part of the sequence until then. So the robeast poured on all it's fire power on Ginger's ship. At first Keith just fired some weapons at the robeast that had no affect, but he saw a tremendous opportunity when he noticed the robeast wasn't firing at them anymore.

"Form blazing sword!" ordered Keith.

The sword was formed and Keith immediately moved to slice the robeast. But the robeast knew it was coming before it was coming and moved in perfect timing to protect itself. It dropped itself so it was upside-down. In the process it managed to hit Ginger's ship hard with his backside and the red falcon slammed into the ground below. Ginger was knocked so hard, she was unconscious. The robeast turned a half turn as it flew under Voltron so Voltron ended up with its legs straddled across the bird's belly. At the same time, the robeast was reaching up with it's feet and caught hold of the blazing sword and ripped it out of the mouth of red lion. It all happened so fast. Neither Lance or Keith or anyone else saw it coming. The sword didn't just merely fall out of Voltron's right hand, the robeast was still holding onto it and had control of it. No one knew what would happen to Voltron if his own blazing sword was used against him. The bird took no caution because of the lack of information he was getting from people's minds. With the sword being held by his foot, he continued passing under Voltron and then aimed to slice the blue lion right off. But instead of causing any harm to the lion, on contact the sword immediately dissipated back into the same mass of energy it was just before it was formed and was absorbed right back into Voltron. The sweaty looks of fear on all five pilots turned into smiles of relief.

Jeff with Vehicle Voltron was then after the robeast with blazing sword in hand. Without Ginger, Voltron's power wasn't at its maximum, but was still very functional. The robeast dodged Jeff's attempts at striking him. Then the giant vulture grabbed Lion Voltron by the legs with his feet and flung the Lion Voltron right for Vehicle Voltron and its blazing sword.

"Drop the sword! Drop the sword!," Jeff frantically shouted.

The sword was dropped and fell out of the way in time before Lion Voltron would have hit it. Then Lion Voltron slammed into Vehicle Voltron.

"Ahh, Keith!" Jeff spoke even while he was still getting shook up from the impact, and he tried to make light of the situation by saying, "Watch where you're going!"

The challenges of fighting a mind reading robeast were definitely proving to be hopeless. Unless the teams somehow found an edge to use against the monstrous bird, the two Voltrons of the universe were doomed to be destroyed.

Commentary: I meant to make this all into one story with the beginning and conclusion of the battle with the robeast, but it was just too long so I broke it up into two stories. The little tidbit about Lance comparing the robeast to a turkey and continuing to do it just to antagonize Hunk was something I added to the story later but before I posted it.Yes, in the animated series there was an incident where Hunk ended up punching holes right through a dining table without even trying. I don't remember what he was mildly upset over. Or, maybe it wasn't that he was upset but was happy about something. I don't remember for sure. In the Vehicle Voltron series, Crik and Cinda both come from a water world and often have premonitions about when something particularly bad is about to happen or when something particularly dangerous is approaching. It was fun to show them using this gift of senses for this story which fit well as being a premonition situation. I found using Merla's vulture as a robeast to be particularly intriguing to write about because a mind reading robeast was something neither of the Voltrons had faced before, and it had the potential for handicapping them immensely at the same time. Not sure if animated series ever revealed that Vehicle Voltron would lack a bit of power without Ginger's red falcon attached, but it seems to make sense so I used it. Also not sure if Ginger's ship can be attacked once the sequence for forming Voltron is started, but based on how separate her attachment is from the rest of the sequence, it would seem that her ship isn't protected by the process until it's actually takes part in the process right at the end. Not sure what would happen if a robeast got a hold of Voltron's blazing sword and used it on him. It never happened in the animated series. So what happened in this story regarding that was simply based on what I thought would happen.
