The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.
Hunk and Darah, and Keith and Allura had arrived back in the dining room, where everyone else there had been waiting for quite some time to eat. Nanny had a look about her that made Hunk, Darah, and even Allura feel sheepishly guilty. Keith however did not. He had other things on his mind and didn't even notice Nanny. Instead he went straight over to Romelle and said, "Romelle, we need to talk. Come with me."
"Now?" she questioned, the look on her face bordering on fright. Everyone except Keith could tell how angry Nanny was, and Romelle certainly didn't want to add anymore fuel to the fury. But she was a guest at Keith and Allura's table. As King of Arus, it was Keith's choice when the meal started. She foresaw no way of graciously turning him down. Everyone else was giving Keith a shocked look of, "Are you crazy?" No one said anything, but they were all giving him that look -- Nanny more stunned than anyone else.
"Yeah, I've got some questions I've got to get off my mind."
Romelle stood up and followed Keith into the same little side room of the dining room that her and Allura had their little discussion in earlier.
Once the door had closed, Hunk broke the silence in the dining room by asking, "We aren't going to wait for them are we? I'm starved!"
Nanny shot him a look that spoke daggers. Hunk cowered under her glare and said sheepishly, "Or we can wait."
Meanwhile, Keith had questions for Romelle.
"What's so important that you need to know it now, Keith?" asked Romelle sounding concerned.
"Romelle, I need to know. Gosh, I'm so angry with Sven, yet I'm not sure if all of what he said really was true."
"Angry with Sven? What'd he do?"
"We got to talking and I happened to ask how he proposed to you."
Romelle giggled and then said, "Oh that. You know, he and I have never talked about that since it happened. I've never told anyone the full story, and I thought he hadn't either."
"Well, he hadn't. Or, at least that's what he said until he told me. How can you laugh about it? What he did to you was awful!"
"Now I am curious. What all did he tell you?"
"He said how he proposed to you. How he told you he'd ask you to marry him 'tomorrow.'"
Romelle smiled big as she recalled in her own mind that day. Then she said, "Yes, I remember that. How I was so elated to hear him say 'tomorrow,' and how I even daydreamed of how he might do it. It wasn't until later before the day was out that the thought came to me that perhaps the whole thing was one of Sven's tricks. That when 'tomorrow' came, he would say it was 'today,' and so 'tomorrow' would never come. I was half expecting that he would do that and I was making plans to really lay it into him when I saw him the next day. I kind of didn't blame him in way though, if it was going to turn out to be some trick of his. After all, it would have been his way of getting back at me for being so forward about marriage. What'd he tell you happened next?"
"He told me how he hid out the next day so you wouldn't be able to find him. And he told me how he was hiding under your bed that night, how he popped out and proposed to you and then just left after you said 'yes'."
"He did tell you everything," commented Romelle coolly and smiling while looking straight at Keith as if she were recalling that day. "I looked everywhere for him that day, ready to really lay it into him when I found him. But I couldn't find him anywhere. By the end of the day when I went to bed that night, I was convinced that he had left me for good. That I'd never see him again. I had never felt so miserable in all my life. Not even Zarkon's Pit of skulls could hardly compare with how miserable I was feeling. And then . . . and then, there was Sven! And he proposed to me! I don't think I've ever been happier in all my life! So happy he hadn't left, and on top of it all he had proposed to me! I was far too happy to even think straight. And then, after I said 'yes,' he just left! I've never been more furious in all my life. Moments seemed to last forever as I lay there seething in my bed alone in the dark. And then, the humor of it all struck me. It was the funniest thing I had ever experienced. I must have laughed on and off that night for hours on end. I realized that whole experience with the sadness, happiness, anger, and even the humor, was all exactly how Sven had planned on making me feel. He had definitely gotten me back for being so forward. Plus on top of it all, he was testing me. I know he was! He had seized the circumstances of the situation and was using it all as an opportunity to test me. I know he did! He was testing me to see how much I loved him. He figured that if I could forgive him for what's probably the cruelest marriage proposal in history, then I must really love him, and of course I do."
"How can you? How can you still love him and not be in the least bit angry with him for what he did to you?"
"Because I know he did it for me too. I mean, sure, I know a part of him had fun doing it just to get back at me for being so forward. But he did it for me too. He knew I'd feel guilty if he just nicely proposed to me. He knew that if he did that, to me it'd feel like I made him do it. Didn't he?"
"Yeah," answered Keith in amazement. It was never ceasing to surprise him how well Sven and Romelle had known what the other was thinking without ever talking to each other about it.
"So he did it all for me too. He took the chance on being so cruel that he'd risk losing me, just to be sure to show that I wasn't making him propose to me. That he was doing it because it was a what he wanted to do and it was something he was in control of, not me. Sure, I made the suggestion. But he showed me that unless he really wanted to propose, he wouldn't have done it. Isn't that right, Keith?"
"Ah, yeah. That's why he did it all. I sure don't understand any of it, but somehow you apparently both do, and that's what counts."
"Don't look so shocked, Keith. That's really the only way things could have worked out best between Sven and I. He sure wasn't going to be making any moves toward marriage anytime soon without some drastic prodding which really was best heard from me. He would have doubted the advice from anyone else. Coming from me, he couldn't doubt that I wanted to marry him. And the whole proposal stunt he pulled couldn't have worked out better any other way than what it did. It all had to work out that way."
Romelle paused, her eyes diverting from Keith briefly as she was thinking, and a bemused smirk came across her face. Then she looked at Keith and said, "And as you must know, neither Sven or I has said a word to the other about any of it. We've just gone on as if nothing unusual happened."
"And you find that funny?"
"Oh I know we both find it to be quite a joke between us not to say anything. Am I right?"
"Yeah Sven did say the same thing."
"It's been a fun little battle of the wits. It's ironic how the game shows respect for the other while maintaining self respect. That's what makes it so humorous. I hope we never give it up."
"You're both definitely meant for each other," commented Keith.
"I hope you're not still angry with Sven. I hope now you understand that he did what he had to do."
"Yes, thank you. I think I do understand now. Would have never believed it without hearing it from the both of you."
"If there is nothing else to discuss, I suppose we better be getting back."
"Yes, we should return. Thank you, Romelle."
Commentary: This story tells the other side of the story of Sven, That's Awful!. In Sven, That's Awful!, Sven tells in detail how he proposed to Romelle. Keith can't believe that Sven actually understands how Romelle must feel because Sven's description of how he thinks he knows Romelle feels sounds so obviously far fetched. However, when Keith hears Romelle's side of the story, he shockingly discovers that Sven was right! I was feeling like it was difficult to make these two stories sound realistic to their characters. In the animated series, Sven is known for making light of Romelle's concerns. So I thought he could carry things this far given the situation. Overall I like the results I came up with. Also it adds more depth to the shallow telling I present of Sven and Romelle's engagement and wedding in the previous stories Wedding Terror and Sven and Romelle's Wedding.
