Saving the Enemy

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

While the team was inside the ready to explode Doom ship trying to save Keith, Hunk was still in hot pursuit of Lotor who was becoming quite irritated with the chase.

“I’m leaving you,” the Prince of Doom stated. “Why are you following me?”

Another blast of lasers from the yellow lion was the reply he got back. Lotor barely dodged them from hitting his ship that time. He growled in irritated frustration and then set his ship to go even faster to get away.

“Yeah, you better run!” called Hunk. “And don’t come back!”

Then he broke off the pursuit, satisfied that his defense was now complete. There was no need to continue after Lotor since there was no more threat of attack. Hunk turned back to help the rest of the team.

He landed yellow lion in the Doom ship's hanger bay where the other lions already were. After exiting the lion through the top hatch on its head, he jumped down to its shoulder and then to the floor. Then he ran to leave the docking area and search the ship for his friends. But he halted when something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. He turned and looked and distinctly saw the ends of 4 blue fingers tensely gripped to the floor.

Hunk drew out his laser gun and cautiously walked over to the area to see what was going on. Soon he saw his enemy who had been so fleeting, and in a moment she also saw him. Upon seeing each other, they both showed expressions of shock. But Darah's expression quickly turned into a look of angry hatred.

"Go away and leave me alone," she hissed.

"I'm not leaving you to die," Hunk snapped back, suddenly becoming angry himself.

He put his gun away and crouched down in an open stance beside her hand, keeping his weight on his back leg and reached for her hand.

"Give me your hand," he said.

"I said leave me alone," she sneered. Though given the situation of hanging by one hand, she couldn't have reached up for him even if she wanted to

Hunk leaned over further, grabbed onto her arm with both his hands, and stood up lifting her out of peril.

Darah had no gratitude for the favor. As soon as Hunk had her out, she kicked him hard on the side of his face, He let go with his left hand as a reflex reaction to cover his aching jawbone. Then she wretched her good arm out of his hand and side swept him onto the floor with her leg as she grabbed his laser gun and started to run. Hunk took his hand off his face and grabbed back for the gun before he hit the floor. The force of them both pulling caused the gun to fly out their hands.

"Oh no you don't," said Hunk, and as he hit the floor, he caught a hold of Darah's left leg with both his hands and pulled her to the floor.

Darah turned and punched Hunk straight on in the face.

"Hey, watch the face!" exclaimed Hunk, not at all relenting his hold.

They heard the laser gun hit the floor with a clatter and saw it just before it dropped through the hole Darah had just come out of.

"Great, that will have to be replaced," commented Hunk in a sarcastic tone.

Darah went for another punch to Hunk's face. This time he let go of her leg with one of his hands and caught her fist in his hand.

"I said, watch the face!" exclaimed Hunk, aggravated with her aggressiveness.

Then Darah broke her leg loose and kicked him hard in the stomach. Hard enough that despite Hunk's strong stomach muscles, it still hurt.

"Oof!" Hunk let out as Darah was then scrambling to get to her feet and get away. Hunk continued, "OK, that's it!"

He crunched down hard on Darah's fist that he still held in his hand, determined not to let it go.

"Ahh!" yelled Darah through clenched teeth without even a hint of it sounding like a scream. She turned an angry glare toward Hunk, but there was little time to look at him because he was already back on his feet like she was, and then he was quickly behind her back. He pulled her fist down to the opposite side of her waist and held it there. Then he reached across the front of her to grab her other arm.

"Ahh!" a short genuine scream of pain escaped Darah's mouth as she felt excruciating pain in her right shoulder just as Hunk was starting to grip her right arm.

Hunk quickly let go of the arm before he had even moved it. Then he noticed the wound on her shoulder.

"You're hurt," he said, his voice surprisingly full of concern. Yet he didn't lower his guard.

Hunk bear-hugged Darah around her waist, pinning only her uninjured left arm. Then he lifted her so her feet were off the floor. Under the pressure of the bear-hug, Darah lifted her legs outstretched in front of her so she was practically in a sitting position. Hunk then plopped back down to the floor with Darah and wrapped his legs over the top of hers so she couldn't move.

"There," said Hunk in satisfaction, "now we'll just sit here until my friends get back.

"Let me go!" she demanded.

"I can't trust you. We're staying put until I get some help."

Commentary: It was fun writing Darah as a tough Drule warrior who's strength was a challenge even for Hunk. Good thing one of her shoulders was injured! As for the overloading of Hunk's blaster, it seems to me that something similar happened in the animated series, but I don't remember for sure. If it didn't happen in the series, it still seemed plausible to me that it would be something that could happen, so I wrote it into the story.
