Secrets of the Rings Revealed

Story and pictures by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

Shortly after their wedding, when Keith and Allura had a chance of some time to be alone together, the reality of the astonishing miracle that had happened to Keith struck them.

“Allura, what just happened?”

“I don’t know,” answered Allura knowing exactly what Keith was talking about. “It seemed to have something to do with this ring.”

For the first time Allura finally noticed the brilliance of the ring on her finger. “It’s so beautiful! Where did you get it from?”

“You don’t think that the ring had anything to do with it, do you?”

“Keith, you saw as well as I did that the ring had everything to do with it. You saw what it did and what happened. What are you hiding? Where did you get it from?”

“Yes, I saw it all happen, but I didn’t think anything of it until now.”

“Neither did I. It’s strange. But what is this ring? Where did you get it from?”

“I wanted the perfect ring for you, Allura. I came across a strange old man that I had been told had the most beautiful diamond ring ever seen on Arus. He gave me the ring and suddenly he was gone before I had a chance to discuss a way to pay for it.”

“You mean he just disappeared?”

“No. I mean, I guess he could have. I wasn’t looking at him for a moment, and the next moment when I looked he was gone. And he was a very strange old man. He talked sort of cryptically and kept calling me ‘Your Majesty.’”

“Did he kind of look like a lion?”

“Yes, how did you know?”

Allura didn’t answer and was pausing to think. Then Keith looked down at the stunning ring on his own finger.

“Allura, where did you get this ring from?”

“I think it was from the same man you met. The description seems to fit exactly.”

“You were in the caves?”

“Yes, and yes I was there by myself as I well imagine that you were, too.”

“Well, yes. At least Lance knew where you were, didn’t he?”

“Of course. I am mindful of my own safety. What about you?”

“I’m sorry if I’ve sounded overprotective. But as ruler of Arus your safety is very important.”

“Keith, I realize that. Do you realize how important your safety is? Even when you weren’t king yet?”

“I see. Now I think I understand your frustrations over what must seem like others’ over concern for you. I hadn’t thought of my own safety in that same way. But I also let Lance know where I was. Still, I didn’t realize how important my safety really was. But you know your safety is more important, Allura. You are Arus’s heir to the throne. No one else is.”

“My daughter,” called a haunting voice, and then a transparent image of King Alfor’s ghost appeared.

“Huh?” said Keith, startled at the sight of King Alfor.

Surprised, Allura gasped a little. Then with a touch of awe in her tone, she said, “Father!”

“Allura, Queen of Arus. Keith, King of Arus and now my son,” continued King Alfor. “Your union of love with each other delights my heart.”

“Oh, Father,” said Allura with a touch of sadness as tears welled up in her eyes but didn’t fall, “a part of me was hoping that somehow you’d be there for our wedding.”

“Allura, I was,” replied King Alfor warmly, and Allura showed an expression of awe, surprised that she hadn’t somehow felt his presence during the wedding. “The symbols of your union to each other that you each wear represent much more than that.”

“Father, what are they?”

“I will explain by explaining what the rings represent. But some of the explanation won’t make sense to you because you still do not know the source of the rings. On your ring, my daughter, the six points of the star in the center represent the six lions.” Keith and Allura were both very puzzled to hear this because they knew there were only five lions, but they held their peace and listened on. “The seventh point of the star represents weakness which is just as important as any of the lions because sometimes in weakness lies the greatest strength. Six of the hearts around the star represent each of the lions’ separate, but equally shared strengths in spirit, which depends upon their pilots. The seventh heart represents weakness of imminent defeat, but it shows equal strength with the other hearts because sometimes in imminent defeat lies the power of the greatest wisdom. The silver surrounding the hearts that surround the seven points reflects the purity of the purpose of how the powers within it are used. The gold band represents the road to treasure for those who are worthy of finding it. The symbol of the stars on both rings represents how the lions and weakness are all a part of one whole. On the king’s ring, the six stars represent the six lions and the seventh represents weakness in which sometimes lies the greatest strength. The seven points of each of the stars also represent this and that all the parts of the whole are separate but contained within each other. The silver band going through the stars reflects the pathway of purity in purpose. The slightly wider band of gold above represents the slightly larger components of the right side, and the slightly thinner band of gold represents the slightly smaller components of the left side, (Click here for more information) and their attachment to the silver represents the equality of both sides in strength and purity of purpose. In themselves they are nothing but representations of greater things, but the source of their material is of great substance. On rare occasion, even these mere representations are capable of reflecting great power because sometimes when things are most hopeless, love makes miracles happen.”

“Father, I don’t understand. There are only five lions, not six. How can the rings represent six lions?”

“Child, there is much you won’t understand about the rings because you don’t know their source.”

“What is their source?”

“You will discover the source of the rings if you ever need it.”

“The old man who gave us the rings, is he the source?” asked Keith.

“No,” answered King Alfor. “He was nobody. He was just a piece of spontaneous unpredictable magic that came from the source. The source of the rings will be discovered if it is needed.” Having said that, King Alfor started to fade away.

“Father!” called Allura, not wanting him to leave, but he was gone.

“Wow,” said Keith looking at his ring, “these rings are something else.”

“Yes,” agreed Allura. “Let’s go tell the others about them!”

Keith and Allura found Lance, Hunk, Pidge, Tammy, Coran, and even Nanny all in Castle Control all still dressed in their wedding formals. (Sven, Romelle, and Prince Bandor weren’t there. Romelle was talking privately with her brother, and Sven was waiting in the banquet room for Romelle to return). Their friends could tell that Keith and Allua had some exciting news to share and they were suddenly eager to find out what the news was. Then Keith and Allura began their story about their recent encounter with King Alfor, taking turns telling different pieces of the event. The tale started out interesting enough with describing the appearance of King Alfor, and this captured everyone’s attention to listen raptly to find out what King Alfor had to say. However, there was quite a bit of yawning and some eye rubbing as their friends fought to stay awake as the story of the encounter went on. When Keith and Allura were finished, their friends all looked glossy-eyed and tired.

Then Lance commented, “Only you two would have the attention span to listen to and remember all that! Had King Alfor told anyone else, the person would have fallen asleep.”

Then everyone started laughing except for Keith and Allura because they didn’t understand it. But then Keith and Allura realized that what Lance had said was true and they started laughing, too.

Nanny suddenly looked cross when the laughter died down. “You two have both kept your guests waiting long enough. Now get yourselves to your own wedding banquet so they can start serving. The only reason any of the rest of us are here in Castle Control is to make sure there are no troubles approaching.”

“Oh, Nanny,” said Allura sounding a little annoyed but not at all angry, “you’re exaggerating. You know as well as I do that a social time for the guests before eating was planned, and they just now are getting ready to serve the food.”

“Right, and you’ve both missed that socializing time to be with your guests. Now you better get yourselves there in time for the meal to be started on time.”

“We’re on our way, Nanny,” said Keith. “The rest of you are also coming, aren’t you?”

“The rest of you go,” said Coran. “I’ll stay here to make sure we know about any trouble that may come up.”

“Coran!” exclaimed Allura, and she gave him a look of You better come! “Coran, just set your comband to alert you if there is anything suspicious that the Castle Control picks up on. You’ve got to be there for the wedding celebration.”

“Very well,” relented Coran as he began to set his comband and Castle Control to alert him of any troubles. “That should work.”

“And Coran, could you do me one more little favor?” asked Allura.

“And what’s that, my Queen?”

Allura approached Coran, gingerly kissed him on his right cheek, and said, “Enjoy yourself!”

Then everyone in Castle Control left to join the wedding banquet. Romelle and Prince Bandor joined Sven just before the rest had arrived. Because Prince Bandor was royalty, he was also seated at the wedding party table.

After the wedding feast was a wedding dance similar to the dance after Sven and Romelle’s wedding on Planet Pollux. Keith and Allura danced as they had never danced before, with Keith taking full advantage of his now completely healed left shoulder. At one point, Allura did notice that Coran was just standing around and nervously checking his comband for signs of trouble form time to time. She left Keith to dance one dance with Coran and reminded him of her wish that he make sure that he enjoyed himself. Coran smiled, apologized, and relaxed and enjoyed the rest of his dance with the queen. Then Allura asked if he would be in charge of making sure Nanny had a good time the rest of the night. Coran obliged the queen’s wishes and to Nanny’s surprise and delight, he danced with her the rest of the night. Seeing that Coran was relaxed, Nanny let go of making sure all the details of the reception went perfect, and just enjoyed herself.

Commentary: There were only five lions in the cartoons, except for a white lion that wasn’t of the lions that form Voltron. That white lion appeared to Allura as her father come back in the form of a white lion. But, it was all Hagar’s magic, and the white lion was later transformed into a robeast. I came up with the idea of a sixth lion. To find out more, read the background information at the top of the story The White Lion. All the stuff about what Keith and Allura’s wedding rings represent I made up. The magic the rings possess is unpredictable as I explain in the story Doom and Darkness United Again. They are NOT a fix all for just any bad situation, and would be very difficult to try to use on purpose. King Alfor is the only ghost I plan on using in my stories, with the exception that perhaps the angel-like creature in Rings of the White Lion could be considered a ghost. Both the ghost of King Alfor and her are seen in the animated series. Although I chose to have Queen Ariella exist as the first ruler of Arus in my stories, her ghost does not exist (I still have yet to type those stories up). Her ghost is in Voltron the Third Dimension, but it’s an element I don’t really like so I don’t use it. To see great Voltron fiction using Voltron the Third Dimension within the continuation, check out Adele's website at http://www.alluraandkeith.homestead.com. Even the elements of Voltron the Third Dimension that I don’t like she writes about well! The animated series never showed an ability of setting a comband up with a link to Castle Control as remote alert of any dangers that may come up. I just figured it’d be something that could be done and used it as a way to get Coran to leave Castle Control. As a spoiler to later stories I need to get written and typed; no, Coran and Nanny don’t have a romantic attraction to each other. Nanny was just thrilled with the attention of getting to dance, especially with someone she well respected. And the mutual unspoken feelings between them were that they were just two friends having fun with no thoughts that the other may feel differently.
