Shattered Dream

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

Merla had returned to her room, and was all alone.

Lotor was gone. She had almost lost her guardian vulture by her own doing. King Zarkon had humiliated her by having her be overpowered and seized by two regular sized robeasts. And, on top of it all, she had just found out she was pregnant and wasn't even the first to know. Not only that, she had found herself being accused that it wasn't even Lotor's. The Queen of Darkness smiled at the thought that her daughter would be heir to be ruler over both Planet Doom and Planet Darkness. Stupid old king probably didn't even see it coming that with her marriage to Lotor, he was doomed to have a female as heir to the throne. After all, there was biological reason as to why only females inhabited the Planet Darkness.

But her smile soon faded. She was quite sad over the loss of Lotor. It hurt much that he couldn't love her, not even her in the spitting image of his love, Allura. And why couldn't he love her for her? She looked in a mirror and saw a reflection of herself with her long pink disheveled hair in kinky curls from it being in a braid. Tears began to stream down her face as she stared at the reflection of herself, and she said aloud, "Why couldn't he love me? Why couldn't he find me beautiful?"

She laid on her bed realizing she wouldn't even be stuck on her fascination with Lotor except that he had become a prize she couldn't have. Had he loved her, she probably would have quickly bored of him. Or, would she have? She knew she'd probably never know.

She rolled over on her side, and went to sleep, exhausted with grief.

She awoke to the sunrise on a high plateau on Planet Doom. She was dreaming, but she didn't know it. It all felt so real. Though it all was so peculiar, her subconscious successfully defied letting her suspect it was a dream.

Merla stood up and gazed across the landscape from the high plateau. In her dream her hair was still unbraided in long disarray as it blew in the wind. Gone were the kinky braid curls, instead the natural wave to her pink hair flowed in the wind.

"Merla," came a voice from behind her. Then a touch on her left shoulder sent her feelings flying. She turned to find herself face to face with her lost love, Lotor.

"Merla," he cooed as he ran his right hand through her hair while holding her at the waist with his left hand. His right hand and arm were normal with no signs of the injury Keith had once caused. Merla glanced at her own left hand and saw that it too was normal with no signs of the dark webbing the powers of darkness had permanently marked her with. Then she forgot all about it at the sound of Lotor's voice as he continued, "You're so beautiful. I love you. I want you. Having you is all I need."

He pulled Merla closer to him embracing her in fervent passion and kissing her without abandon. Merla fully gave in to the passion, both of them lost in each other, eyes closed. Their hands moved sensually over each other as they continued their nonstop kiss. Lotor ran his hands through Merla's flowing long hair as if she were the most precious possession in existence to him.

Merla had never felt warmer in her life. It didn't matter that she was cold to the touch. Lotor was loving her! Then, her body temperature miraculously did begin to warm up until it was as hot to the touch as Lotor's. As the dream continued, the crown on her head abruptly began to fade away and then had disappeared altogether. (Lotor hadn't been wearing his crown). Then a long light purple full length gown materialized on Merla. It was the style of something a Greek goddess might wear. The voluminous skirt trailed behind her in the wind, flowing like her hair. As time went by, her crown rematerialized on her head. Soon after that, the long purple gown began to disappear revealing her usual attire underneath.

Then Lotor himself began to fade away. Merla could feel it happening and opened her eyes only to see the transparent face of Lotor looking back at her as their lips were still touching, and then he was gone. Tears immediately began streaming down Merla's face. She stood there silently on the plateau staring off despondently in the direction where Lotor once was. Her body temperature dropped ice cold. Much colder than what it usually was; so cold it froze her tears and any sweat that was on her body. Merla reached up with both hands and touched the frozen tears against her face. She couldn't feel the coldness but recognized the ice because of its hardness. At the touch of the ice on her face, she was overcome with great despair, but continued to be despondent in appearance. As she brought her hands down from her face, she spread them out to her sides as if she was an eagle. Then like a board she fell forward toward the flat rock surface of the plateau she'd been standing on. The purple gown rematerialized and her crown disappeared as she fell. As she hit the ground, she shattered into dust like glass from a shattered light bulb. Then she woke up with a gasp. She sat up and felt her face. It was of her normal cold temperature. She got out of bed and went to a mirror. There she re-braided her hair before going back to bed.

Lotor had been the love of Merla's life. Her dream had made her face up to that fact. She experienced all the hopes she'd ever wanted if he were still with her, and faced up to all the hurt involved with losing him. Then she died to it all, allowing the pain to completely consume and destroy her.

Awake then to a new life, she was ready to move on. The vivid memory of her dream provided closure for her emotions regarding Lotor. But it did not appease her anger against the Voltron force or her re-awakened hunger for power since she had made alliance of herself again with the forces of Doom.

Commentary: I've wondered how Merla would look with her hair down, and in what situation she would have her hair down. That was part of my inspiration for creating the story Don't Ever Cross the Queen of Darkness . But, in that story, her hair was all disheveled. I'd think she'd look quite beautiful with her hair down, and so I wanted to create the situation in which she'd have her hair down and looking as beautiful as it could. Only if she were dreaming do I imagine she'd see herself with her hair down. In her awake life I figure she'd deem such a thing as impractical vanity. I don't think she has anything against looking beautiful, but I think she'd discover it quite annoying to have her hair get in her way. What was particularly cool about portraying Merla in a dream state was that it left my imagination free to have her look in many different ways. I wasn't sure what color dress would be best for her to wear. I guess light purple was the best I could come up with, although white also crossed my mind. I even thought of doing a poll on it to get opinions of other Voltron fans, but I didn't. So I just went with light purple. Although my inspiration for this story was to portray Merla looking very beautiful, I was impressed with how well it made sense for her to deal with her feelings over Lotor in that way. Lotor being gone happened in the story The White Lion . Merla almost losing her vulture happened in the stories Battle of the Minds and When Evil Can Do No Harm . King Zarkon had humiliated her in the story Don't Ever Cross the Queen of Darkness , which was also when it was revealed she was pregnant. In the cartoons, it was revealed that there are only females on Merla's planet. In a previous story I haven't posted or typed yet, I explain my idea that Merla and her people can only conceive female children which would be one possible explanation as to why her planet only has females. (But men are involved in the process!) So I use that idea as to why there are only females on Merla's planet in this story. The injury Keith did to Lotor's arm is described in the story Wedding Terror . The incident of the markings on Merla's hand are described in the stories Merla's Sacrifice and Lotor and Allura? The cartoon episodes have mentioned that Merla has cold body temperature (when her and Lotor kissed, and it was implied when Zarkon didn't notice the difference between Hagar scratching his back compared with Merla doing it). But Hagar's body temperature is mentioned in the cartoons as ice cold. In my stories Hagar is ice cold because she is a witch, but Merla isn't quite as cold because she's not quite a witch (which for me is what the cartoons seemed to imply). In my stories Merla has had life occurrences that have caused her to have similar signs to being a witch (which I think the cartoons also imply).
