The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.
After Allura and Romelle had re-entered the dining room after having a little chat together in the privacy of a little side room, Hunk and Darah were still no where to be found though it was past time to eat! Instead, people were still standing and having all sorts of different conversations with each other. At the sight of Lance, Allura's conscience suddenly pained her. Since everyone was still waiting on Hunk and Darah, the queen took the opportunity to take Lance aside away from the others.
With Lance away from Karla, Keith then spotted his own opportunity and took his sister aside to have a talk with her.
"Hey," said Karla trying to express her displeasure to brother her without drawing attention to herself from everyone else, "that kind of hurts! What do you think you're doing?"
"We're going to have a little talk whether you like it or not, and this time you better tell the truth!"
Keith had an unanswered question in his mind that had been there since some revelations he had gained during his lengthy discussion earlier with Lance. And the only answer to that question lied with his sister.
"Tell the truth about what?" Karla spat in an angry whisper as she faced her brother and roughly pulled her arm away from him once they were off to the side away from the hearing of everyone else.
"Why'd you lie to me?"
"About what?"
"The ONE time you visit me at space academy and tell me all that news about how you'd fallen in love for the first time, and during a space excursion of all things. You didn't even know of anyway that you'd ever see him again."
"That was all true!"
"...and I didn't even know his name," said Keith mimicking what his sister had told him back on Earth so long ago.
The fiery anger immediately extinguished in Karla's eyes and was replaced by sense of sheepishness.
"Oh that," she said quietly as she was suddenly looking away from Keith's eyes and at the floor. "Yeah, that part wasn't true."
"So why did you lie to me about it?" demanded Keith again sounding just as angry as ever.
Karla looked up from the floor and into Keith's eyes again. The fire in her own eyes was beginning to rekindle. "Why'd I lie about it?" Then she threw in more anger as she repeated, "Why'd I lie about it? Think about it Keith. Why would I tell you? I wanted to share the happiest day of my life with you because you're my brother. I wanted so badly to share it with someone, and naturally that was you. I hadn't developed any ties with anyone after we lost our parents, but at least with you, we're bonded by blood. Besides I had a feeling you'd been really concerned about how I was doing. I'd been wanting you to leave the Alliance forces and accept our parents disappearance and quit pretending you were going to use space exploration as an opportunity to find them when really you were running away from your pain. But I wanted you to leave for the soul purpose of facing up to your pain, not because you were concerned about how I was handling things. So I told you the story about falling in love to give you a sense of normalcy that I was doing fine."
"So why didn't you tell me his name?"
"Why would I? So you could track him down and give him a piece of your mind? I felt like I already said too much by saying he was a part of the space academy. And just look how you've reacted since Lance and I have been reunited. I said that I didn't remember his name because though I was in love, I didn't really expect that I'd stay that way, that he'd stick in my mind forever and I wouldn't be able to forget him. I've known so many people that I've had no emotional ties with. I've always been one to try to face things how they are, Keith, so I sure didn't think my crazy feelings of love over someone I just met but would never see again would last. And I sure didn't want you tracking the poor guy down when we'd eventually just forget each other and never see each other again anyway."
"How could you treat your feelings so lightly? Why didn't you try tracking him down?"
"Keith, he was a part of the military of the Galaxy Alliance. The same Galaxy Alliance that lost our parents. The same Galaxy Alliance I despised you for joining. Sure, just talking with him had given me a respect for military and the Galaxy Alliance I didn't have before, but I didn't want to get involved with someone I could lose the same way we lost our parents. Do you know how hard it's been for me knowing day by day that one day I could get the news that I've lost you too? I loved Lance since that first day I met him, but I didn't expect the feelings to last. I just figured that logically they'd fade away and eventually there would be someone else I'd fall in love with. It happens all the time. But the feelings never faded, they never went away. Yet life goes on. I kept looking forward to the day you'd come back or that our parents would miraculously return. That part of my life was so unsettled that other feelings in my life just didn't matter much. I certainly never imagined that it'd be because of Lance that I could let it all go." Then Karla's tone turned angry again, "And you ask me why I lied? Geez Keith, think about it!"
Keith was feeling really bad that he hadn't realized the obvious. It's often been said that love is blind, but anger often is too.
"I'm sorry, Karla," apologized Keith sincerely. "I didn't realize."
"Well now you do," said Karla still sounding rough.
"I'm happy you and Lance are together."
"Thank you brother," said Karla in a happy tone, and she hugged him with him hugging her back.
After parting from their embrace, Keith asked with concern, "Are you still hoping our parents will come back?"
Karla could see her brother's concern, but answered truthfully, "I'll never give up that hope Keith. Even after I'm old and gray if they haven't come back by then, I'll still have hope that they will. I mean with all that's out there in the universe that we don't know about, maybe something has happened to them that stopped or slowed their aging or lengthened their life. I know it's most likely that they perished, but most likely doesn't mean for sure that it happened. So no, I'll never let go of the hope that they may return. Have you given up hope?"
"Honestly, no I haven't. A piece of me just can't accept for sure that they are gone. And that part of me still expects that someday, while traveling somewhere through the vastness of space, I'll happen across them. It's something I don't think about anymore, but it's always there because now that I do think about it, I know I've always got that hope somewhere in me."
After that, the two siblings felt comfort in knowing that although neither one of them had given up on hope for their parents, they were also getting on with their lives knowing it was most likely neither one of them would see their parents again.
Meanwhile, Allura had been having a talk with Lance. She had taken him aside just before Keith had drug Karla aside to have a chat with her.
The queen stood close to Lance as she was holding onto his forearms and her eyes got all teary, though the tears didn't fall.
"What's wrong, Highness?" asked Lance really concerned.
"Thank you, Lance. Thank you so much! I've never really fully appreciated what you did for me."
"Did what?"
"You loved me. Though I never realized how much until . . . until I heard what you told Karla. Lance, one of the hardest things to do is to watch someone you love, love somebody else. But not only did you watch it happen, you set it up. You never knew you would ever see Karla again. But you still set up Keith and I to be together."
"Lance smiled and said, "Lighten up, Highness. It was no big deal." But then he paused realizing that wasn't completely true. "OK. It was hard to do, but I wasn't sad to do it. You're my friends and you belong together. I've never regretted it, and I'm being completely honest when I tell you that." There was an awkward pause and then Lance said. "So you're very welcome. There, you feel better now?"
Allura wasn't teary anymore. She smiled and said, "Yes, Lance thank you. I couldn't have asked for a better friend."
Suddenly, Lance sprang forward and kissed the queen on the cheek. It was something he had never done before, but felt the sudden urge to 'get her back' for all the times she had done similar to him. Allura had an expression of shock as he was kissing her. Everyone in the room happened to see the incident and suddenly became silent.
As quickly as it had happened, Lance had withdrawn himself and said to her, "Ha, got you first that time!"
Then Allura smiled and said, "I guess you did." Then she gracefully kissed him right back on the cheek.
"And just what's that all about?" asked Karla jealously.
Keith said nothing. He didn't even feel a hint of jealousy, just baffled as to what could be going on. After his recent talk with Lance, Keith had been convinced beyond a doubt that Lance was in love with only his sister. And he genuinely didn't think anything more of Allura kissing Lance except that it was her playful expression of friendship she had always had with him. He honestly knew she didn't mean anything by it. And after all, Lance had kissed her first. Keith would have been surprised if she hadn't "gotten him back" by kissing him back. Now if she ever kissed anyone on the lips, it'd be a completely different story. And that was something Allura would never willingly do. Her love was for Keith only. And Keith's love was only for her. Since their profession of love for each other, they both knew that and were completely confident in the other. Keith was just baffled as to what would be going on -- especially to cause Lance to kiss Allura for the first time ever.
Then Lance announced, "Tag, we're it!"
Lance sprinted forward and caught up Karla, passionately kissing her; while Allura had launched herself forward and did the same to Keith, causing him to instantly chalk up the whole incident as just something spontaneous Lance had an urge to do. And as he passionately kissed Allura back, he was completely satisfied in his curiosity as to why it all happened.
And the whole thing of the Lance's and Allura's kissing exchange ended there, even dissipating Karla's feeling of jealousy. After all that, no one would have imagined that something even more shocking was about to happen.
Commentary: I had picked up Allura's comment "...one of the hardest things to do is to watch someone you love, love somebody else," from somewhere else, but I don't remember where. The part where Allura tells Lance that she realized how much he loved her after what he had told Karla refers to what Lance had said regarding Allura in the story Surprise Confession. And the part referring to when Lance sets Keith and Allura up together happens in the story Keith and Allura: The Proposal. Back in the story Keith's Sister, Keith explains to Allura about the time his sister had told him that she had fallen love during one of her excursion trips in space, and she said she didn't even remember his name. Then in the story To Their Surprise, Keith is surprised to find out that his sister knew Lance by name. And later, in the story Confessions between Keith and Lance, Keith finds out from Lance that Lance was the man Karla had fallen in love with during the space excursion she had told Keith about so long ago. Then Keith realizes she had lied to him about not being able to remember Lance's name, and he wondered why she did that. I almost forgot to write the story that answers that question, but I got a reminder to write it, and so it came to be. Originally the episode I wrote above between Keith and his sister, and the episode between Lance and Allura, I meant to be two separate stories. But they were both very short tellings so I decided to combine them together into one story. It was tricky to write with both events happening at the same time, but I liked how it turned out. I found it especially fun to write the episode between Lance and Allura because of Lance kissing Allura for once and because of the misplaced yet logical jealousy Karla experienced. Later I added what Keith's reaction was to it all. At first I had left his reaction out because he didn't have much of a reaction. But then I decided to add it because I decided that perhaps Keith's reasons for non-reaction weren't obvious to a reader unless I made it clear.
