Where’s Arus’s Defense?

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

Merla had been watching Hagar’s crystal ball, and she knew when Voltron had passed the point after which trying to return in time to defend Arus would be hopeless.

"Now’s the time," she said and smiled sinisterly. In her mind, the only thing that could foil the attack on Arus would be if Voltron turned back for Arus while she was on her way to begin the attack. If they did that, it would leave Earth without Voltron’s defense. Then perhaps Earth actually would be conquered. As she saw it, either way the forces of Doom and Darkness win. She got into her starcutter and headed for Arus with a space coffin carrying a robeast in tow behind her. Also following were several small Doom fighter ships.

Meanwhile, just after Lion Voltron was too far from Arus, Jeff received a call from Galaxy Garrison.

"Captain Jeff," stated the same admiral who had originally asked the Lion Voltron force for assistance in defending Earth. "Your orders have been changed. You are to return to the Explorer at Acura immediately."

"Are they under attack?"

"You have your orders," replied the admiral simply.

"Very well, Admiral. I’ll inform Commander Hawkins of our return."

A short time later, King Keith received an urgent message from Coran at Castle Control. "You're majesty, we’re under attack and we haven’t been able to hail Vehicle Voltron. Are they on their way? We’re relying on castle defenses."

In the background Keith could see Pidge's girlfriend, Tammy, controlling the castle defenses. He was briefly amazed with her proficiency in what little time Coran had to teach her. He also quickly caught sight of a smaller view screen in Castle Control that showed the ensuing battle. On it, he recognized Merla’s starcutter. His whole being felt sickened with hopelessness as he watched a robeast be released from a space coffin and be enlarged to Voltron’s size. The others of the Voltron force were also seeing these same things.

"Keith, we’ve got to go back," urged Queen Allura in a panicked tone."

At that point, Earth was not that far away. In fact, lion sensors depicted it as seen vaguely in the distance.

"Captain," the admiral’s face showed on the view screen as the audio transmission came through, and his voice was urgent, "Earth is under attack. We need Voltron!"

"So does Arus," replied Keith curtly. He abruptly ended the transmission and immediately said, "We’re turning around team."

Keith couldn’t understand what could have happened to stop Jeff and the rest of the Vehicle Voltron force. What he did know was by the time they were back to Arus, the Castle of Lions and all the people’s homes in all the kingdoms would surely be destroyed. He shuddered to think of how many lives would be lost as well. The only hope was to make it back in time to protect the people who had escaped and hidden in the caves.

"Keith," a transmission came through and Jeff’s face showed on his view screen. The others in their lions could see and hear the conversation on their view screens in the as well. "don’t turn around. We’re approaching Arus right now. There’s just one robeast, and we’ll take care of that. Arus is as good as safe."

"You caught us just before we turned around," revealed Keith wondering why Jeff hadn’t acknowledged the hails from Castle Control. But he didn’t ask about it. There would be time for questions later.

"By the way, you were right not to trust Galaxy Garrison. We’re defending Arus against direct orders. We’ll see you when you get back. Jeff out." And the transmission was ended.

"All right team, we’re going on to Earth," affirmed Keith.

"What if it’s all a trick?" asked Hunk. "What if that wasn’t really Jeff?"

"Your majesty," a transmission from Coran came through and his face could be seen on the view screen as the others also watched and listened in, "we’ve made contact with the Voltron force. They’re in sight and on their way."

"Thank you, Coran," said Keith. "Earth is under attack as we speak. But the Voltrons will protect both planets. Keith out."

As the Vehicle Voltron force was nearing Arus’s atmosphere, Jeff received a transmission from the admiral in command of affairs at Galaxy Garrison in the absence of Marshall Graham and Admiral Benson.

"Captain Jeff," barked the admiral, "your orders were to return to the Explorer at once. Follow those orders immediately or your rank and military career will suffer for your insubordination!"

"Admiral, I said I’d do as I said. I will inform Commander Hawkins of our return, and our return will be after Planet Arus is out of danger. As we speak, Planet Arus is under attack by a robeast. Since we are here, it is our duty as the Voltron Force to defend the planet. Would you care to rephrase your order, sir, or will it be your rank and military career on the line?"

The admiral was noticeably seething inside over Jeff’s brazenness and insulted that he had been duped by the captain. "Very well," replied the admiral through clenched teeth. "Do what needs to be done to defend Planet Arus. Then immediately return to the Explorer. Your presence at Arus is causing a serious delay in your primary mission. And I won’t take lightly that you did disobey direct orders from Galaxy Garrison. Over and out."

"You can take it however you like, Admiral," mumbled Jeff to himself after the admiral signed off.

The Vehicle Voltron force was in Arus’s atmosphere by the time the transmission with the admiral had ended. They continued to fly on to the Castle of Lions in the same form they had traveled in as the three team fighter ships: Strato Fighter, Aqua Fighter, and Turbo Terrain Fighter.

"All right teams," began Jeff, "we need to conserve our energies, so let’s make sure we destroy this robeast without using Voltron."

Then they began a barrage of attacks on the robeast using the three fighter ships. (I don’t remember the weapons the three fighter ships of Vehicle Voltron had, so details are lacking). The robeast was not particularly strong because opposition by Voltron was not expected. Within a short period of time, the robeast was destroyed just from the sheer barrage of weapons being fired upon it at one time from the three fighter ships.

Afterward, the three ships broke up into the 15 separate unit ships. They landed on the inside of the moat that surrounded the castle. Then they all went inside to meet with Coran. The main concerns on Jeff’s mind were how to regenerate the energy supplies on the units and how long it would be before Lion Voltron was back. One thing was certain in Jeff’s mind; he would not leave Planet Arus defenseless. Vehicle Voltron was there to stay until Lion Voltron was back.

Commentary: Based on the personality displayed in Jeff in the Vehicle Voltron animated series, it didn't seem out of character for him at all to end up being insubordinate. I chose not to reveal the name of the troublesome admiral from Galaxy Garrison. No name came to my mind and so I stuck to writing him as a vague character causing trouble for our heroes despite the fact that they are on the same side. I know Vehicle Voltron loses power within 5 minutes after forming Voltron, so I had Jeff take this into serious consideration and the robeast was defeated without Voltron. Later in future story it'll be explained why Jeff didn't answer Planet Arus's hails.
