Woeful Wooing

Story by Sheila Bliss

The following is a story of Voltron I made up based on the T.V. cartoon Voltron by World Events Productions. I did not have World Events Productions' permission to do the story and therefore it does not have World Events Productions' endorsement.

Hunk and Darah had returned to the Castle of Lions after an incredible experience together on the desert sands of Arus involving going there in yellow lion and Hunk proposing marriage to Darah. She accepted the proposal with all her heart and then they both witnessed an incredible phenomenon of the yellow lion. It was an experience they chose not to share with anyone else sensing that it was all of a very personal nature and meant for them alone. But their engagement . . . that was news to share!

They found their friends in Castle Control. Keith and Allura, Lance and Karla (Keith's sister), Pidge and Tammy (Pidge's girlfriend and member of the Voltron force), and Coran were there.

"So how was your outing," inquired Pidge.

"Darah and I are engaged to be married," announced Hunk.

"Whah!" exclaimed Pidge as sounds of astonishment came from everyone else too.

Karla shot Lance an angry glare which Lance well expected after hearing the announcement.

"What brought this on so soon?" asked Keith who had not noticed the nonverbal exchange between his sister and Lance.

"It just happened and the timing couldn't have been righter," answered Darah as she cuddled up to Hunk's right shoulder.

Karla continued to shoot angry glares. She and Lance didn't have much more history together than what Hunk and Darah did. Yet she had wanted things to move ahead with Lance much faster than they were going. She had sensed that Lance was holding back, but had thought it silly for her to think that since they had just recently met again and had only met briefly once before so long ago. But hearing of Hunk and Darah being engaged who had also just recently met and at one time were enemies of each other, she was suddenly infuriated with Lance and saw no reason why he shouldn't have already initiated a proposal of marriage to her.

Lance was thoroughly feeling sheepishly disgraced over the situation. He didn't think it unreasonable at all that Karla should expect that he should have proposed to her before Hunk had proposed to Darah. And he felt guilty that he had planned on biding his time with her. He felt a greater sense of control with that attitude, but the moment just after Hunk and Darah's announcement, that attitude came tumbling down, even before he noticed the angry glares Karla was shooting his way.

Then, at a moment when he and Karla's eyes met, Lance blurted out in nervous desperation for redemption, "Will you marry me, Karla?"

Karla's angry glare was suddenly mixed with a look of shock that was quickly followed by her feeling enraged. Everyone else was in a state of shock after hearing it.

When he wasn't getting an immediate answer, Lance quickly followed his question with, "Marry me, Karla. I love you."

"How dare you!" she stormed. Much more lingered on her tongue to spew out at him, but she didn't want to waste herself on him with another single word, and she left the room.

Keith was infuriated over the pain and embarrassment Lance had caused his sister and was the first to speak in a seething sort of tone saying, "To think I ever took love advice from the likes of you."

The words brought back vivid memories to Allura about how grateful she was to Lance for setting up her and Keith. She desperately wanted to believe that all that had just happened couldn't have possibly happened and she said, "Somebody wake me up and tell me this is all nothing more than a really bad dream."

Hearing those words suddenly brought an idea to Lance's mind. A very desperate idea that he had little hope of it working, but he'd have to muster up complete faith in it if it was going to have the slimmest chance of working. Then he said, "Thank you, Highness. I'll try that."

"What?" asked Allura sounding bewildered because it was a statement that made no sense to anyone except Lance.

Then with determined purpose, Lance strode out of the room. Keith had an idea what he was about to do and began to follow after him calling out, "You hurt my sister again, Lance, and so help me I'll . . ."

"Let him go, Keith," interrupted Allura. "He can't cause anymore harm than he's already done."

All heads suddenly swung over to look at Allura in confident disagreement.

Allura then suddenly understood how far from the truth her statement was.

"All right, so maybe he can," she recanted. "But please Keith, still give him the chance."

"I hope you're right, Allura. Frankly I hope she kicks his butt off the edge of the palace balcony. He certainly deserves it."

"Yes , he does," broke in Coran. "But I much more hope that somehow Lance can make amends."

Commentary: The story where Hunk and Darah became engaged and experienced an incredible phenomenon of the yellow lion happened in A Transfer of Heart . I wrote this story because it was natural to explain how Hunk and Darah go about telling their friends the news that they are engaged to be married. And I figured it'd be natural for Karla to be jealous over it. Then I figured it'd be natural for Lance to so swiftly end up putting his foot in his mouth. The story where Keith takes love advice from Lance is Keith and Allura: The Proposal . The story showing how grateful Allura was with Lance over setting her and Keith up is Breaking the News . It was fun having this story lead to problems for Lance that he direly needed to solve.
